help us fight poverty.

We are cycling through Africa not only for the thrill of a new adventure, but also to raise funds for charity.  The trip itself is entirely self-financed, and 100% of your donations will go directly to CAMFED (the Campaign for Female Education).  CAMFED currently reaches over 70,000 girls in Africa and ensures them a brighter future through education.  Donations can be made safely and securely online in either  US dollars or British pounds.  To calculate the Euro exchange rate please click here.

why we chose camfed.

Choosing a charity to support during our cycling trip through Africa was no easy feat.  There are astonishing numbers of international aid agencies vying for donations.  CAMFED stands apart for two main reasons:  its focus on root causes of poverty and its grassroots approach.  Experts agree that educating girls is one of the most cost-effective ways of alleviating poverty.  CAMFED believes in empowering locals by providing them with the resources to bring about change.  The don't just provide handouts which trap recipients in a vicious cycle of dependence.  CAMFED works closely with local leaders and  relies heavily on local staff.  Read more about CAMFED and its founder, Ann Cotton,in the press here.

We hope our cycling expedition will raise awareness of the special challenges girls in Africa are facing.  And of course we hope to inspire you to make a generous donation to this highly worthwhile cause!

girls are africa's hope.

CAMFED is dedicated to extending girls' access to education in poor rural communities of Africa.  In these areas, many girls leave school before they have the chance to gain the knowledge and skills they need to turn the escape from poverty. They want to go to school. Their parents want them to go school. But there is no money for clothing, books and school supplies.  CAMFED provides the  support necessary to make sure girls can attend primary school.

economic independence.

The next stage of CAMFED’s programme supports young women to achieve economic independence and the freedom to make choices in their lives.  In Zimbabwe, Ghana, Zambia and Tanzania, training and micro-finance is in place to enable young educated women to become entrepreneurs in both the social and business sectors.

CAMFED has also established Vocational Training Centres in northern Ghana. At the centres, training by local staff is provided in fashion and design, information technology, carpentry, secretarial studies and catering. The trainees accepted into the programme are the most disadvantaged members of their community, including young women, unemployed young men, street children and people with disabilities, and as such their tuition is subsidised by CAMFED to ensure they can attend.
