Happy to report I stayed surprisingly dry. \u00a0Very happy to see the National Parks working hard to cut down on plastic waste!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>GDMBR in Wyoming<\/h2>\n<p>The official Great Divide Mountain Bike Route Route darts out of the Tetons fairly quickly and leads riders up Union Pass.\u00a0 Wildfires had been raging in this part of Wyoming and conflicting information was bouncing around.\u00a0\u00a0 Some sources claimed the pass was closed and wouldn\u2019t re-open for several weeks.\u00a0 Others insisted the fire had already jumped across Union Pass road and travel in the area was now safe.<\/p>\n<p>Not being able to nail down concrete road closure info (and pleased at the thought of spending more time in the Tetons) we opted for an alternate route passing through the popular resort town of Jackson. \u00a0It was August, so naturally, Grand Teton National Park was overrun with visitors.\u00a0 Busloads of camera-toting tourists disembarked at all the scenic spots and jostled for space, \u00a0snapping selfies posed in front of majestic mountains and pristine lakes.\u00a0 Luckily we could trundle by on our bikes and steer clear of the hoards.<\/p>\n<h2>Water on the GDMBR<\/h2>\n<p>In the pleasant town of Pinedale, we rested up for a few days and prepared for the Big Empty.\u00a0 So far on GDMBR, stocking up on water and provisions had been fairly straightforward.\u00a0 We\u2019d stumble into towns with grocery stores every couple of days. \u00a0Fast-flowing streams were plentiful and with the help of our Sawyer filter, we\u2019d have clean drinking water within minutes.<\/p>\n<h2>Dry days ahead<\/h2>\n<p>Outside of Pinedale, lay Wyoming\u2019s Red Desert. On the entire GDMBR, this section is one of the driest and most sparsely inhabited.\u00a0 Careful planning is essential.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 819px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/28944860112_c0cd9b5665_b.jpg\" alt=\"riding GDMBR in Wyoming\" width=\"819\" height=\"546\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">This is more typical of GDMBR scenery.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The Red Desert<\/h2>\n<p>This 6 million-acre region of southwestern Wyoming is the largest unfenced area left in the Lower 48.\u00a0 I\u2019m pretty sure The Red Desert is larger than at least a couple of countries we\u2019ve biked (Swaziland, Lesotho).<\/p>\n<p>The unforgiving land is inhabited by herds of wild horses, 50,000 pronghorn and very few humans.\u00a0 Energy companies in search of oil, natural gas, uranium and coal have recently started exploiting the desert\u2019s riches.\u00a0 \u00a0Oil wells, drilling machinery and worker camps now blight the bleak and barren landscape.<\/p>\n<p>The area has been compared to the steppes of Mongolia.\u00a0 For us, the Red Desert conjured up parts of Oman.\u00a0 After mountains, deserts are our favorite terrain.\u00a0 We love the quality of the light and the endless vistas.\u00a0 The biggest challenges of desert riding are water and wind.<\/p>\n<p>Since the GDMBR is such a popular route, info on water is readily available.\u00a0 The longest stretch without water is the 60 miles (100 kilometers) between Diagnus Well and A&amp;M Reservoir.\u00a0 Luckily for us, the weather was cloudy and we didn\u2019t drink much.\u00a0 Winds in the Red Desert can be ferocious, but we were mostly spared their force.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 819px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/28944863392_1a694fe1e5_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"819\" height=\"546\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Not far out of Pinedale we hit a series of roller-coaster ups and downs. These were fairly fun as velocity took us nearly to the top of the next climb.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 819px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/28847309140_762439c133_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"819\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Our first night camping out of Pinedale. We&#8217;d put in a long day but wanted to make it to near a water source near a river.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 819px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/28512645514_4a20e6076d_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"819\" height=\"546\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The entire Great Divide Mountain Bike Route is packed with history. We pass just a handful of cars and motorcyclists.
