{"id":6093,"date":"2016-05-28T14:08:50","date_gmt":"2016-05-28T18:08:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/?p=6093"},"modified":"2020-01-09T02:29:18","modified_gmt":"2020-01-09T07:29:18","slug":"back-in-the-usa-bicycle-touring-in-montana-and-idaho","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/2016\/05\/back-in-the-usa-bicycle-touring-in-montana-and-idaho\/","title":{"rendered":"Back in the USA- bicycle touring in Montana and Idaho"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/1_26860936710_0025fa463d_b.jpg\" alt=\"bicycle touring towards Lolo Pass, Idaho Montana Border\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One last ride across the University of Montana campus and we were ready to roll.\u00a0\u00a0 A familiar feeling of intense excitement mixed with melancholy swept over me.\u00a0 Montana felt like home and it was hard to leave.<\/p>\n<p>I liked Missoula and its m\u00e9lange of hipsters on clunky bikes and rednecks in humongous pickup trucks.\u00a0 The city maintains a strong sense of community in spite of superficial differences.\u00a0 A love of nature and the great outdoors is what defines most Missoulians.\u00a0 Eric and I fit right in.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6134\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6134\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"_wp_link_placeholder\" data-wplink-edit=\"true\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-6134\" src=\"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/collage-montana-2-1024x512.jpg\" alt=\"bicycle touring in Missoula MT\" width=\"1024\" height=\"512\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/collage-montana-2-1024x512.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/collage-montana-2-500x250.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6134\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Last Best Place on Earth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Biking across Montana&#8217;s Bitterroot Range<\/h2>\n<p>Our route was taking us over Lolo Pass and the Bitterroot Range and into northern Idaho.\u00a0 We\u2019d been off the bikes for several weeks catching up with family.\u00a0 \u00a0A mountain pass (albeit a small one) seemed a daunting endeavor for <i>Day One<\/i>.\u00a0 Fitness goes fast.\u00a0 Way too fast.\u00a0 As we chugged up the gentle grades of Highway 12, my legs felt feeble and the Koga unusually slow and sluggish.<\/p>\n<p>Later, I\u2019d learn why the ride had seemed so taxing. Being out of shape wasn\u2019t the only culprit. \u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gravitysportsidaho.com\/gravity-team\/aaron\/\">Aaron Lisco\u2014the gifted bike mechanic from Gravity Sports in Mc Call, Idaho<\/a>, pointed out that my alignment was off causing extra friction.<\/p>\n<p>My beloved Koga was, apparently, approaching the end stages of its useful life. Aaron miraculously whipped her back into shape, but suggested \u00a0that we transition to newer models with Rohloff and all the bells and whistles.<\/p>\n<p>As I see it, the Koga is now performing better than ever.\u00a0 Gears shift when they should. Most of the clicks and clacks have disappeared.
