Oman is an oasis of tranquility and stability in a region which is, well, troubled<\/i> at times.\u00a0 Of course just because there\u2019s a spot in the Middle East where you can ride your bike without risking beheading by an ISIS operative doesn\u2019t make it a great spot for touring.<\/p>\n

Craggy peaks and rugged terrain, empty deserts and a long picture-perfect coastline, ancient castles and forts–that\u2019s<\/i> what draws adventure cyclists to Oman.<\/p>\n

These days just a trickle of two-wheeled travelers makes it to Oman.\u00a0 But that\u2019s sure to change.\u00a0 The government is making a big push to attract Western tourists.\u00a0 Better go now before the masses realize what they\u2019ve been missing.<\/p>\n

Is Oman safe for bicycle touring?<\/h3>\n

Oman is, admittedly, not situated in the best neighborhood.\u00a0 Paradoxically, it\u2019s one of the world\u2019s safest countries. \u00a0 As far as security is concerned, the Sultanate of Oman ranks right up there with super-safe Japan .<\/p>\n

Violent crime and petty theft are virtually nonexistent in Oman. Go ahead and leave your bike unlocked while you pop into the supermarket, it\u2019ll be there when you come back.\u00a0 Pitch your tent on a popular beach and slip into a deep sleep, no need to worry about thugs waking you during the night.\u00a0 Parade through a crowded marked with your pricey camera, nobody will bat an eye.<\/p>\n

The Sultan is well-loved by his people. Political unrest in Oman is about as likely as spotting a hipster sipping coffee in McDonalds.<\/p>\n

And don\u2019t worry about standing out in a crowd.\u00a0 As in other wealthy Middle Eastern countries, foreigners make up a large part of the workforce.<\/p>\n

When\u2019s the best time to visit Oman?<\/h2>\n

In the winter (obviously).\u00a0 Unless you\u2019ve got a masochistic desire to bake your body under the scorching Arabian sun, it\u2019s best to cycle Oman between November and March.\u00a0 The rest of the year it\u2019s unbearably hot and surprisingly humid.<\/p>\n

Is bicycle touring in Oman expensive?<\/h3>\n

Absolutely not!\u00a0 Well, unless you want to check into a hotel every night.\u00a0 That\u2019ll be expensive\u2014count on at least $20 USD for a basic room, much more in major cities and resort areas.\u00a0 Wild camping is plentiful, safe and easy.\u00a0 So unless you really love your creature comforts, there\u2019s no need to fork over your hard earned cash for lodging.<\/p>\n

Even the tiniest of towns will have a basic shop selling fruits, vegetables and basic goods at reasonable prices.\u00a0 Inexpensive restaurants run by expats from the subcontinent serve up cheap meals–$2 USD will get you lunch.<\/p>\n

Entry to forts and castles is free or very inexpensive.\u00a0 Oman doesn\u2019t have a huge number of Couchsurfing<\/i> and Warms Showers<\/i> members, but we were able to find hosts on four occasions.<\/p>\n

We spent an average of $ 12 USD per day—almost exclusively on food.<\/p>\n

The ubiquitous coffee and dates. This is the standard way to welcome guests and a quick and delicious pick-me-up for touring cyclists.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Are there any hassles in Oman?\u00a0 How\u2019s local hospitality in Oman?<\/h3>\n

Oman is fairly hassle-free.\u00a0 Locals don\u2019t stop and stare and nobody will try to scam you.\u00a0 Omanis are very friendly and will often stop to ask if you \u2018need anything.\u2019<\/p>\n

Some scruffy cyclists report being offered money.\u00a0 Gifts of cold water and snacks are common, and locals may invite you for a meal.<\/p>\n

Being invited home is rare-nothing like the non-stop invitations cyclists receive in neighboring Iran. Omanis are very private people and not as open to having random cyclists hanging out on their sofa.<\/p>\n

Do women cyclists in Oman need to follow a special dress code?<\/h3>\n

Women in Oman are free to dress as they please.\u00a0 Women are not required to cover their hair and can even wear figure-hugging t-shirts, skimpy shorts and miniskirts if they feel like it.\u00a0 The recommended dress code in Oman is shoulders and knees covered. Travelers who dress modestly are appreciated in Oman.<\/p>\n

How are road conditions in Oman?<\/h2>\n

Highways and major roads in Oman are usually in good condition and generally have a wide shoulder.\u00a0 Roads without a wide shoulder are pretty scary.\u00a0 Mountain roads can be extremely rough and are often incredibly steep.\u00a0 In fact, we have \u00a0cycled no country with roads steeper than those found in Oman.<\/p>\n

What about drivers in Oman?\u00a0 Do they practice good road safety?<\/h3>\n

Sadly, Oman ranks among the world\u2019s deadliest countries for road fatalities.\u00a0 Omanis are not particularly conscientious drivers and have a fast and furious driving style.\u00a0 We felt safe enough on Oman\u2019s roads, but maybe that\u2019s because we\u2019d just come from India.<\/p>\n

Where\u2019s the best camping in Oman?<\/h3>\n

Omanis and expats living in Oman love to camp, so pitching your tent will be quite an ordinary thing.\u00a0 Beach camping is popular and you\u2019ll find shelters to provide protection from the sun.<\/p>\n

Wind can be brutal, so look for a protected spot.\u00a0 Camping in wadis <\/i>(dry river beds) is another option.\u00a0 Flash floods can strike without warning so exercise caution.\u00a0 In Oman\u2019s mountainous interior finding a flat spot to pitch your tent can take some time, but you\u2019ll be rewarded with spectacular views and a star-filled sky.<\/p>\n

You might also enquire about camping at date-palm plantations.\u00a0 Workers will usually find you a spot to pitch your tent and you\u2019ll probably also have access to a hot shower and electricity to charge your various devices.<\/p>\n

What Oman bicycle touring routes do you recommend?<\/h3>\n

The stark beauty of Oman\u2019s mountains offers some of the most memorable cycling in the Middle East<\/p>\n

Our absolute favorite<\/strong> Oman cycling route is the Nizwa \u2013 Wadi Bani Awf \u2013 Rustaq r<\/strong>ide.\u00a0 Stunning views make up for extremely rough roads and shockingly steep grades.\u00a0 Another not-to-be-missed road is the ride up to Jebel Shams.<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019ll encounter steep grades, but the road\u2019s mostly paved and considerably easier than the Nizwa \u2013 Wadi Bani Awf \u2013 Rustaq route.<\/p>\n

The ride from Muscat to Salalah has some great coastal riding<\/strong> mixed in with some bleak and boring bits. You\u2019ll cycle past camels galore and delight in some fantastic sunsets. Best of all, you can step back in time and get a real taste of rural life in fishing villages in Oman.<\/p>\n
