Go ahead and leave your bike unlocked while you pop into the supermarket, it\u2019ll be there when you come back.\u00a0 Pitch your tent on a popular beach and slip into a deep sleep, no need to worry about thugs waking you during the night.\u00a0 Parade through a crowded marked with your pricey camera, nobody will bat an eye.<\/p>\n<p>The Sultan is well-loved by his people. Political unrest in Oman is about as likely as spotting a hipster sipping coffee in McDonalds.<\/p>\n<p>And don\u2019t worry about standing out in a crowd.\u00a0 As in other wealthy Middle Eastern countries, foreigners make up a large part of the workforce.<\/p>\n<h2>When\u2019s the best time to visit Oman?<\/h2>\n<p>In the winter (obviously).\u00a0 Unless you\u2019ve got a masochistic desire to bake your body under the scorching Arabian sun, it\u2019s best to cycle Oman between November and March.\u00a0 The rest of the year it\u2019s unbearably hot and surprisingly humid.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/23854443954_8499a27b3f_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Enveloped by the desert on the road to Salalah. Lovely cycling in January, not so much in June.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Is bicycle touring in Oman expensive?<\/h3>\n<p>Absolutely not!\u00a0 Well, unless you want to check into a hotel every night.\u00a0 That\u2019ll be expensive\u2014count on at least $20 USD for a basic room, much more in major cities and resort areas.\u00a0 Wild camping is plentiful, safe and easy.\u00a0 So unless you really love your creature comforts, there\u2019s no need to fork over your hard earned cash for lodging.<\/p>\n<p>Even the tiniest of towns will have a basic shop selling fruits, vegetables and basic goods at reasonable prices.\u00a0 Inexpensive restaurants run by expats from the subcontinent serve up cheap meals&#8211;$2 USD will get you lunch.<\/p>\n<p>Entry to forts and castles is free or very inexpensive.\u00a0 Oman doesn\u2019t have a huge number of <i>Couchsurfing<\/i> and <i>Warms Showers<\/i> members, but we were able to find hosts on four occasions.<\/p>\n<p>We spent an average of $ 12 USD per day&#8212;almost exclusively on food.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/24586685942_98a21b851f_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The ubiquitous coffee and dates. This is the standard way to welcome guests and a quick and delicious pick-me-up for touring cyclists.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Are there any hassles in Oman?\u00a0 How\u2019s local hospitality in Oman?<\/h3>\n<p>Oman is fairly hassle-free.\u00a0 Locals don\u2019t stop and stare and nobody will try to scam you.\u00a0 Omanis are very friendly and will often stop to ask if you \u2018need anything.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Some scruffy cyclists report being offered money.\u00a0 Gifts of cold water and snacks are common, and locals may invite you for a meal.<\/p>\n<p>Being invited home is rare-nothing like the non-stop invitations cyclists receive in neighboring Iran. You\u2019ll cycle past camels galore and delight in some fantastic sunsets.
