{"id":5815,"date":"2015-01-04T10:21:54","date_gmt":"2015-01-04T09:21:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/?p=5815"},"modified":"2020-01-08T03:57:57","modified_gmt":"2020-01-08T08:57:57","slug":"bicycle-touring-yunnan-province","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/2015\/01\/bicycle-touring-yunnan-province\/","title":{"rendered":"China Loop: the grand finale"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"pl-5815\"  class=\"panel-layout\" ><div id=\"pg-5815-0\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-5815-0-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-5815-0-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"0\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p>The blog\u2019s been quiet for the past few months.\u00a0 Many of you have wondered what\u2019s up.\u00a0\u00a0 Well, we haven\u2019t tossed in the towel, if that\u2019s what you\u2019re thinking.\u00a0 And no, we haven\u2019t been lounging on some Thai beach attempting to recover from the rigors of China.<\/p>\n<p>And if you\u2019re imagining 8+ years on the road together has driven us into acrimonious divorce proceedings, think again.\u00a0 Jerry Springer will not be luring us onto his show for the lurid details of a big break up.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve just been busy with other stuff.\u00a0 And a tiny bit lazy.<\/p>\n<p>Six weeks back we said goodbye to China and rolled across the border back into Laos.\u00a0 After almost a month in the <i>Land of a Million Elephants<\/i> (sadly, we only saw 3 of the massive beasts, and they were squashed into the back of a truck) we biked over the border into Thailand at Nong Kahi.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 At the moment, we\u2019re on our way to Mae Sot where we\u2019ll cross into Myanmar.\u00a0 Then it will be onto India and the Himalayas.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve never had the inclination (or discipline) to keep a diary. So writing an accurate blog update 2 months after the fact is proving almost impossible.<\/p>\n<p>I do, however, like taking photos.\u00a0 So I\u2019ll share a few and let you use your imagination to fill in the details.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 683px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5613\/15624400447_eb9da8391b_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"683\" height=\"1024\" data-wp-editing=\"1\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">We rolled out of Kunming on a perfect autumn day. There were even bike paths and sane drivers.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" src=\"https:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8621\/15843138136_8a6583bc63_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Some nice relaxing cycling around Lake Xingyun. We thought about camping here but decided the spot was too exposed and might attract the attention of the local police. We ended up in a clean and cosy village guesthouse (hot shower included) for the bargain price of 50 Yuan ( $7).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 683px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7526\/15190572133_0ce6d0b0eb_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"683\" height=\"1024\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">In the morning we came across this old guy making a run for the outhouse.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7537\/15811954632_06c9e4987d_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Soon it was time to stop for a big bowl of noodle soup! Yum. I like the soup in Yunnan best because you can fancy it up with a big array of condiments.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7543\/15625273317_5ff19aede4_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Most days started with a thick morning fog. Sometimes it wouldn't burn off until well into the afternoon. This can get frustrating when you've spent several hours climbing a big mountain only to hage ZERO visibility at the top. This shot was taken not far from the city of Lushan in the area famous for the Yuangyang rice terrace.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5602\/15190042714_4502ddcece_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">This area is home to the Hani People--one of China's many minority groups. Minority people often don't like to have their photo taken. I think they're fed up with Han Chinese shoving cameras in their face. These ladies were taking a selfie with their camera phone and agreed to let me take a shot too.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7559\/15811458812_3d32c79a9e_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">These are some of the beautiful terraces around Lushan. The actual Yuanyang terraces are now some type of tourist attraction and foreigners are charged an exorbitant fee to enter. We just saw the poor man's terraces. Nice enough for us.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7507\/15823540546_91c461d037_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Some really stunning rides in this part of Yunnan province. Long climbs, never too steep. Just how I like 'em.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7501\/15786061146_b0e2fa8c4f_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">One night we camped at the home of a Hani prince. There was a big feast going on and we were invited to partake. The food was delicious but a bit spicy for my tastes. The guests got very drunk on shots of whisky and began singing loudly. Probably the one and only time I'll be invited to dine with a prince.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7468\/15230190803_dd08036d54_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">This Hani shopkeeper was so friendly and curious about our tour that I just had to take her portrait.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 683px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7582\/15245052413_cff356f5a1_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"683\" height=\"1024\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Eric found a nice route following a lot of quiet--and often muddy- back roads.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7525\/15662495658_e7aca7e512_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">This was a nasty stretch of road on our way back to Mengla and the border with Laos.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7557\/15865263141_72b33d0f7b_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"341\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">For my last image of China I'll leave you with some gruesome shots of the market in Mengla.
