There are insects and snakes and odd pickled vegetables, live chickens and goats and whole sections devoted to the sale of loudly squealing pigs.<\/p>\n<p>Just being part of all the hub-bub is exciting.\u00a0 Old women doubled over under the weight of enormous loads elbow their way through the crowd.\u00a0 Men slash chickens\u2019 necks in a mechanical fashion and toss them aside to be boiled up for waiting customers.\u00a0 Whole pigs and cows are sawed and hacked into individual portions across from the lady expertly dicing eggplant and cauliflower.\u00a0 Families from outlying villages roll into town on heavily-laden motorcycles ready to trade their harvest for life\u2019s necessities.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/15009693029_e552c9bb5c_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"819\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">A mind-boggling assortment of fruits and vegetables are available.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5711\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5711\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/butcher-collage.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5711\" src=\"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/butcher-collage.jpg\" alt=\"Yes, it's gruesome.\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/butcher-collage.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/butcher-collage-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/butcher-collage-500x500.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5711\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Yes, it&#8217;s gruesome.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/15025864907_ba7a4270ab_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"341\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Morning rush hour in Yunnan.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>All types of people<\/h2>\n<p>The people of Yunnan are a colorful mix of minority groups (including the Dai, Yi, Li and Naxi peoples) and Han Chinese.\u00a0 It\u2019s fascinating to see how local dress changes from one small region to the next.\u00a0 Men seem to favor military fatigues for work in the fields.\u00a0 The more remote the village, the fewer young people you\u2019re likely to come across. They&#8217;ve all headed off to the cities in hopes of landing a factory job.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m continually amazed at how hard people work, even at what appears to be very advanced age.\u00a0 Mechanization is minimal and much work is still done by hand.<\/p>\n<h2>Right season for cycling<\/h2>\n<p>Autumn is a lovely time to tour in Yunnan.\u00a0 The harvest is in full swing.\u00a0 In one area locals were hauling in sacks of walnuts to be weighed and traded. In another spot,\u00a0 rice stalks were being slashed by hand.\u00a0\u00a0 In the mountains, we roll past grizzled old men tending groups of goats and sprightly women meandering along with a herd of unruly cows.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/15011914697_e1680a87dc_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">It&#8217;s not uncommon to see cows being herded through towns. In cities people pop around on silent electric scooters.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/15055296539_17f497d0fe_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The rice harvest near Dali.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/15010818088_97f7da872d_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Just another hardworkin&#8217; man.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We love rural life and checking out villages that don\u2019t seem to have changed much in decades.\u00a0 But there\u2019s much more to explore in Yunnan province.<\/p>\n<p>The ancient cities of Lijiang, Dali and Weishan are the region\u2019s biggest tourist draws.\u00a0 We ambled down the cobbled streets and past painstakingly-restored buildings in each of them.\u00a0 \u00a0We were duly impressed.\u00a0 They\u2019re mega touristy, but if you slip into the back alleys you can almost uncover a sense of authenticity.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/15017595768_97f953c8ab_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Weishan old town.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 683px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/15203717042_b289f7c707_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"683\" height=\"1024\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">A nod to the past.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>The top reason to bicycle tour in China<\/h2>\n<p>Of course, what draws cyclists to the region is the incredible beauty and diversity of the landscapes.\u00a0 Lowland areas have a positively tropical feel with their palm trees, verdant rice terraces and sprawling tea plantations.\u00a0 Once you draw nearer to the Sichuan border, elevation increases (our highest pass so far has been 3,700 meters), temperatures drop precipitously and alpine scenery takes over.\u00a0\u00a0 One of our most beautiful camping spots ever was at the foot of the imposing Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, whose peak soars to 5,500 meters.\u00a0 We were lucky enough to spend a peaceful night there after the hordes of tourists had scuttled off on their buses.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/15109079207_8b69c20495_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cycling towards Jade Dragon Snow Mountain at dusk. It&#8217;s part of a national park which has an entrance fee of $20 for foreigners. We waited to enter until after 6pm and were allowed to enter for free.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/15292468791_1613d6e593_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">One of our most beautiful camping spots. The place turns into a circus once mass tourism begins at 7 AM.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/15109042877_ba9937c5be_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">You can&#8217;t tell from the photo, but there are hordes of excited Chinese tourists everywhere. Fortunately, this is about as far as most of them go so you have peace and quiet for the rest of the ride to the Tiger Leaping gorge.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Tiger Leaping Gorge, on the way to Shangri-la, is one of the world\u2019s deepest and a mecca for trekkers.\u00a0 We got a glimpse of the gorge while crossing the Yangtze on a rickety ferry.\u00a0 By all appearances, the crossing near Daju is rarely used.\u00a0\u00a0 The dock is accessible via a narrow, steep footpath that descends 300 meters to water\u2019s edge.\u00a0 With so little business, the ferryman doesn\u2019t man the post full-time, but must be summoned via mobile phone.\u00a0 Up until just a few months ago, we were one of the few hold-outs to the worldwide mobile phone mania.\u00a0 Boy are we glad we finally broke down and got a smart phone (a cheap one, mind you, from Lenovo).\u00a0 Without a phone we\u2019d have had to retrace our tracks all the way back to the village to make a call.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/15117289777_3b55348175_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"341\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">We may have let slip a few curses as we heaved the bikes up the rocky path on the other side.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/15117101050_974a790246_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Near the Tiger Leaping gorge, just a few hundred meters above the Yangtze. The road climbs, and climbs and climbs all the way to Haba.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/15281003926_84e4694219_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">With all the time wasted waiting for the ferryman and a long time spent cooking lunch (the village restaurant was closed) we arrived at Haba near dusk. So happy to find a place billing itself as an International Youth Hostel. Cozy room with electric blankets and hot shower for 50 Yuan (about $8)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>The road to Shangri-La<\/h2>\n<p>From a low point of 1,600 on the Yangtze, we\u2019ve been up and over 4 or 5 passes on our way to Shangri-la. \u00a0Inclement weather (OK, really just a gloomy, unrelenting rain that\u2019s chilled us to the bone) has us trapped in a tiny two yak village 45 kilometers from the city.<\/p>\n<p>Big challenges lay ahead.\u00a0 On the road from Shangri-la to Litang, we\u2019ll be taking on numerous high passes, several over 4,500 meters.\u00a0 Neither of us deal with the cold particularly well and I\u2019ve suffered altitude sickness in the past.\u00a0 Winter is fast approaching and I\u2019m more than a little concerned about how we\u2019re going to deal with climate conditions.\u00a0 Our last high mountain passes were in the Bolivian Andes way back in 2011.\u00a0 We\u2019ve never been over 3,000 meters since then.\u00a0 I fear so much time spent in the tropics has made us soft.<\/p>\n<p>The scenery on the Tibetan plateau is meant to be stunning, \u00a0I just hope we can cope.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/15117181969_a70ec2dd46_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"341\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The village we took refuge in. Obviously they haven&#8217;t got internet (there wasn&#8217;t even a toilet that we could find and one could only dream of a shower). Were sending this update from Shangri-la where we&#8217;re drowning in luxury with attached bath and WiFi. More about the town in our next update.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/15300954781_949f090f86_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Not a single regret that we wimped out and sought shelter instead of soldiering on to Shangri-la in the rain.
