We would not be swatting mosquitoes as we bailed water from a flooded tent.<\/p>\n<p>Local women would offer us a fine meal of hot coconut curry and a sticky rice sweet for desert.\u00a0 We would not be rationing out the last of our food reserves on a windswept Andean pass.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"_wp_link_placeholder\" data-wplink-edit=\"true\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/14854899011_b85e71b53a_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">It&#8217;s the rainy season in Thailand and we&#8217;re attempting to out-pedal storms on a daily basis. Luckily shelter is never far off and we&#8217;ve managed to stay fairly dry.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Well before dawn, we would be woken by the temple gong and the monks\u2019 melodic chanting.\u00a0 In the calm and cool of daybreak we would pedal off on a silky smooth road following a narrow canal.\u00a0 For a few blissful hours, the roads would belong to us.\u00a0 We would not suffer heaving our bikes through the deep sand of the Sahara or bounce around on the backroads of some developing country. (Not to say those experiences aren\u2019t pleasurable).<\/p>\n<p>By noon, the searing sun would be almost unbearable.\u00a0 It would be time for a dip in the sea and a quick snooze on the beach.\u00a0 Or perhaps we\u2019d just slip into one of Thailand\u2019s tourist-friendly and ultra-air-conditioned police-boxes and while away a few hours on the free Wi-Fi.\u00a0 There would be no need to push on in the burning heat.\u00a0\u00a0 Not need to search for our next water source or meal or safe place to sleep.\u00a0 We were in Thailand: the easiest place on earth to go bicycle touring.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/14846614971_9a099bd92c_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">It&#8217;s astonishing the number of high quality paved roads the exist in Thailand. I&#8217;m not sure how my own country&#8217;s road network would fare in a direct comparison.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/14829657174_37b62eed06_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Thai police have moved up to top place in my book! Any force that offers free WiFi, coffee, cookies, sandwiches and clean toilet facilities can&#8217;t be all that bad. Far more useful than the rare tourist info centers.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/14708592827_298bda22c2_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cycle tourists are not the only ones known to regularly camp out at Thai temples. At least half the time, we camp right along Thai people. Most appear to be itinerant vendors selling their wares around the country. Some come really prepared&#8211;electic fans, rice cookers and woks are standard camping gear. Of course we&#8217;re the only ones that arrive by bicycle. Most locals usually arrive by pick-up truck, others on over-loaded motorcycles.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I love a good adventure.\u00a0 Reading \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gettingnowhere.net\/category\/nepal\/\">Getting Nowhere\u2019s account of cycling Nepal\u2019s Anapurna circuit<\/a> got my heart racing.\u00a0 I wanted to do <i>that<\/i>!\u00a0\u00a0 Challenge myself.\u00a0 Test my limits.\u00a0 Find out if my middle-aged lungs are still up to a high-altitude climb.<\/p>\n<p>But there\u2019s something to be said for taking it easy once in awhile.\u00a0 It took us along time really take to heart that basic truth.\u00a0 We rather rushed through Africa, bent on making it to Cape Town. \u00a0\u00a0We raced through South America, wanting to pedal triumphantly all the way to Ushuaia. \u00a0Over the years, thankfully, we\u2019ve gotten better at finding the right balance between relaxed riding and tough touring.<\/p>\n<p>That said, the situation had gotten somehow skewed recently.\u00a0 The highlands of the Philippines were often grueling.\u00a0 Indonesia was also pretty taxing at times. It seemed there was little time for dawdling.\u00a0 There were always more hills to conquer and another island to dash across.\u00a0 The food was often lousy, the traffic horrendous at times and all the attention we garnered really very draining.<\/p>\n<p>(Don\u2019t get me wrong\u2014there\u2019s a lot to love about cycling in Indonesia.\u00a0 \u00a0It is, after all, home to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/2014\/02\/the-best-coastal-cycling-on-the-planet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">best coastal cycling road on the planet<\/a>.\u00a0 All I\u2019m saying is this: \u00a0it\u2019s tough at times.\u00a0 Ultimately rewarding, but you\u2019ve got to work for it.)<\/p>\n<p>Touring in Thailand, on the other hand, is like being let out of school for summer vacation.\u00a0 Days in the saddle are care-free and undemanding.\u00a0 Roads are relatively flat, temple stays are hassle-free (if you don\u2019t mind the 4 AM wake-up call) and Thai food is fabulous (which I\u2019m sure you already know).<\/p>\n<p>The equivalent of $1 will get you a tasty plate of noodles or some stir-fried veggies and rice.\u00a0 For around 100 Baht (about $3) you can treat yourself to a delicious seafood coconut curry and some lemongrass soup.\u00a0 Even the tiniest Thai town boasts a market chock-full of food stalls.\u00a0 The grills are always going, making markets a carnivore\u2019s heaven.\u00a0 Vegetarians can dig into spring rolls and tofu concoctions. Iced coffee and banana shakes are perennial favorites and I always go for the fried bananas. \u00a0For an extra-special treat, we indulge in the coconut-mango desert topped.<\/p>\n<p>Of course the easy life isn\u2019t fulfilling forever.\u00a0 Sloth is only satisfying for so long.\u00a0 The Laos border lies just 400 kilometers to the north.\u00a0 We\u2019ve got a few more days of the easy life and then it\u2019ll be back to what we ultimately love: \u00a0sweat and suffering.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/14645411388_c191914e54_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The ultimate way to relax after cranking out your first 50 kilometers!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/14645315610_0b83dbd464_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">This was lunch at a little hole-in-the-wall place. Around $2 for seafood and stir-fried veggies&#8211;sure beats the instant noodles we were surviving on this time last year in Japan.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/14878861693_ab4f9db372_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ok, a visit to a floating market is just about the most touristy thing you can do in Thailand apart from going on an elephant ride. We hadn&#8217;t actually planned on a visit, but when we saw a big sign with a giant red arrow announcing FLOATING MARKET 2 Kilometers, we swerved and made the short detour. It was wonderful, so colorful and lively! Now I&#8217;m wondering if maybe we should even go for the elephant ride.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/14718093288_1fd7832400_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Despite the popular belief that floating markets exist solely to part tourists from their money, we found many &#8216;authentic&#8217; transactions taking place.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 534px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/14697680558_89c7fecce0_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"534\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">I&#8217;m not ALWAYS resting, but this was a great spot in the middle of some muddy tracks running through a string of fish farms where we got slightly lost. We use the GPS a lot in Thailand, but this time we ever so slightly regretted following its advice.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/14663085717_b4f08b7a0a_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Just a typical Thai fishing village.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/14671745078_4c808e65c1_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">We pass dozens of blinged-out temples like this every day.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/14857866025_2aa40403db_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Most of our time in Thailand was spent on good paved roads, but we did wander off on to a few dirt tracks.
