{"id":5365,"date":"2014-04-24T06:00:04","date_gmt":"2014-04-24T04:00:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/?p=5365"},"modified":"2020-01-05T02:26:52","modified_gmt":"2020-01-05T07:26:52","slug":"venturing-past-volcanoes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/2014\/04\/venturing-past-volcanoes\/","title":{"rendered":"Venturing past Volcanoes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As we crested the summit, a gust of wind brushed away a thick tangle of clouds and our eyes fell upon a spectacular sight:\u00a0 Mount Merapi, Indonesia\u2019s most active volcano.<\/p>\n<p>Rising almost 3,000 meters (10,000 feet), \u201cFire Mountain\u201d has been regularly erupting since 1548.\u00a0 The last major explosion goes back to 2010.\u00a0 Over 300 people lost their lives and thousands of locals fled their homes.<\/p>\n<p>Despite Merapi\u2019s daily rumblings the menacing plumes of smoke drifting over the peak, the fertile land is blanketed in terraced rice fields and symmetrical garden plots.\u00a0 Rambling villages speckle the mountain\u2019s slopes.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a danger zone, not doubt.\u00a0 Fortunately, when we passed, <em>Fire Mountain<\/em> was at rest.\u00a0 \u00a0Mother Nature humbled us <i>without<\/i> a lethal spraying of volcanic rock and ash.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/1_13925353392_58091d7317_b_d.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">That&#8217;s Merapi in the background. If you look closely, you see the villages scattered over the base of the volcano. Locals are courting risk, but the soil is so fertile it entices them on to the slopes of the sleeping giant.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/1_13940848242_0319b3b773_b_d.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The land is heavily cultivated and produces vegetables and rice for those living at lower altitudes.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/1_13962094334_4b38dc3649_b_d.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">This is another volcano we cycled past, Mount Ciremai in West Java. It&#8217;s a striking symmetrical stratovolcano. The road climbs to around 1,200 meters, where the air is cool and refreshing.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/1_13938842196_200cf7b07f_b_d.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fabulous views of the volcano as we descend.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Java: better than believed<\/h3>\n<p>Java\u2019s got a bad rap amongst cyclists<i>.\u00a0 It\u2019s crowded, its roads are treacherous and people less friendly than those on outlying islands.<\/i>\u00a0 Your best bet is to whiz through Java and get to the good stuff: Sumatra, if you\u2019re heading north; Bali, for those travelling south.<\/p>\n<p>This is all true if you stick to the main roads.\u00a0 By day\u2019s end your head will be throbbing from the cacophony of trucks rumbling by and motorbikes blasting past.<\/p>\n<p>But route possibilities are endless on Java.\u00a0 With the help of our GPS, Eric was able to navigate us through some beautiful backroads.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/1_13949536281_d80295ea4b_b_d.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Even on one of the world&#8217;s most densely populated islands, you can find roads like this!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/1_13947092332_fe76ab8055_b_d.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Java&#8217;s even got great biking past picturesque villages nestled in the highlands.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/1_13943153251_30566cc9a7_b_d.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Of course there are less scenic roads like this one. Luckily there&#8217;s usually something interesting going on to distract you from the chaotic traffic.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/1_13975490645_c6bc46a1f0_b_d.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The great thing about Java is that restaurants abound. No need to starve yourself on instant noodles or fill up on junk fund for quick energy.. Tempe and tahu are tasty vegetarian options.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>People on Bikes<\/h3>\n<p>As long as the roads are flat, Indonesians embrace the humble bicycle.\u00a0 Girls and boys in crisp uniforms trundle off to school on two wheels, hard-working villagers balance unbelievably heavy loads on ancient machines and the urban elite fly by on flashy bikes costing the equivalent of several years earnings for their rural neighbors.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s fun being part of the crowd. We get a few long looks, but nothing like the attention we garnered on Sulawesi.\u00a0 The Javanese are industrious people, with no time to linger by the roadside chatting with foreigners and snapping their photo.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-5370\" src=\"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/java-cyclists-collage-small.jpg\" alt=\"java cyclists collage small\" width=\"1080\" height=\"771\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/java-cyclists-collage-small.jpg 1500w, http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/java-cyclists-collage-small-500x357.jpg 500w, http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/java-cyclists-collage-small-1024x731.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Borobudur: Indonesia\u2019s Biggest Tourist Draw<\/h3>\n<p>Well, at least the biggest <i>cultural<\/i> tourist attraction.\u00a0 Bali\u2019s beaches are, obviously, far more popular than 9<sup>th<\/sup> century Buddhist temples.\u00a0 We\u2019d had our fill of beautiful coastline on Sulawesi so wandering around ancient temples came as a pleasant change.\u00a0 The setting, \u00a0a meticulously manicured park surrounded by lush tropical countryside \u00a0and \u00a0rolling hills, couldn\u2019t be lovelier.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/1_13999415063_f8b2fbed93_b_d.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">This is the single largest Buddhist structure on the entire planet. Naturally, Borobudur has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. Tourists can climb to the top of the temple and admire the relief work and stuppas up close.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/1_13980193944_517c97f0ca_b_d.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">It was pretty quiet when we visited, so we could enjoy the views out over the countryside.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/1_13991294514_ecdb08a8ba_b_d.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">These beautiful terraced rice fields are just a couple day&#8217;s ride from Jakarta.
