{"id":5133,"date":"2014-01-31T06:55:35","date_gmt":"2014-01-31T05:55:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/?p=5133"},"modified":"2020-01-04T13:33:04","modified_gmt":"2020-01-04T18:33:04","slug":"slow-boat-to-sulawesi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/2014\/01\/slow-boat-to-sulawesi\/","title":{"rendered":"Slow Boat to Sulawesi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Complete chaos.\u00a0 That\u2019s the best way to describe boarding procedures on the slow boat to Sulawesi.<\/p>\n<p>Passengers debarking in Nunukan stumbled down a steep, metal plank while porters loaded down with goods simultaneously attempted to squeeze\u00a0 and shove their way onto the ship.\u00a0 Unsurprising result: a big bottleneck and nobody moved.<\/p>\n<p>It was one of those shake-your-head-in-utter-dismay moments.<\/p>\n<p>Alright, I know it\u2019s uncharitable to pass judgment (especially on the absurdly friendly Indonesians).\u00a0 But couldn\u2019t they bring in the Swiss for a little logistical training?<\/p>\n<p>Even a simple step like allocating one door for entry and another for exit would work wonders.\u00a0 Moveable steps rather than a precarious contraption with ropes to pull yourself on board would be a major improvement.<\/p>\n<p>But no.\u00a0 Husbands swung pregnant wives on their backs and hauled them aboard.\u00a0\u00a0 The old and disabled were carried like small, sleeping children and gently placed on deck.\u00a0 And the two foreign cyclists with over-loaded bikes were helped aboard by a small posse of do-gooders and a military man with a bull horn charged with keeping back the masses.<\/p>\n<p>This being our tenth Indonesian ferry, we knew pretty much what to expect.\u00a0 Smelly toilets, smokey, clove-scented cabins and sleeping bodies EVERYWHERE!<\/p>\n<p>Lucky for us, the indulgent first officer (we\u2019ve yet to meet an unkind Indonesian) let us squat outside the officer\u2019s cabins.\u00a0 A clean, pleasant smoke-free environment with high-powered air-con.\u00a0 Sure, you couldn\u2019t switch off the lights in the corridor, but when compared to conditions outside in economy class, we were living the high life.\u00a0 Not exactly the Love Boat, but the 40 hours on board were more than bearable.<\/p>\n<p>These photos will give you a better idea of reality on the slow boat to Sulawesi.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5136\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5136\" style=\"width: 877px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5136\" src=\"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/pelni-ship1.jpg\" alt=\"Our cozy spot in the stairwell leading to the captain's quarters. It amazes me how deeply people sleep in spite of bright lights and the noise of fellow passengers snoring and others tripping over them on their way to the toilets.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/1_12182872663_41f0f23044_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Drowsy passengers in the economy class cabins. 90% of male passengers puff away on clove cigarettes, toddlers squeal, mother&#8217;s nurse shrieking infants and students get out the guitar for a round of classic American rock and roll tunes. Pretty full on, but fun. Indonesians love having their photo taken and they love taking photos of foreigners.
