German solo cyclist Heike Pirngruber tells us why Europe’s final frontier, Iceland, is one of her favorite bicycle touring destinations.<\/span><\/h3>\n

Reason 1: The scenery is fantastic–this it is nature at its finest.<\/h2>\n

If you like untouched scenery, glaciers, volcanoes, desert, fjords, rough coastline, ice cold streams and rich birdlife than this is the place to go.\u00a0\u00a0 Iceland has it all.<\/p>\n

Reason 2: \u00a0If you like it the hard way, you can get it here.<\/h2>\n

If you are adventurous, then Iceland has a lot to offer you.<\/p>\n

You can get lost on extremely rough tracks and won’ t see a soul\u00a0for days.<\/p>\n

Sometimes you have to wade\u00a0through ice cold streams–watch out for the strong current.<\/p>\n

You could be confronted with deep sand and extremely challenging tracks.\u00a0The surface can be\u00a0full of\u00a0sharp volcanic\u00a0rocks\u00a0that can easily damage your tires.<\/p>\n

It is tough going and you might be satisfied if\u00a0you manage a measly 50 kilometers a day.<\/p>\n

But I assure you that all the effort is well worth it.\u00a0\u00a0 The tracks are a lot of fun and surprisingly well signposted.<\/p>\n

And keep\u00a0in mind you have them all to yourself.<\/p>\n

The good news is that if you are tired of sand and rocks\u00a0you can easily escape to the 1,300 km long ring road which runs around\u00a0the entire Island.\u00a0\u00a0 It\u2019s \u00a0paved\u00a0all the way and you can enjoy great scenery right from the road.<\/p>\n

Reason 3: Iceland\u2019s weather is better than you might imagine.<\/h2>\n

Even if it is quite often cold and wet and the strong\u00a0wind might blow you off the road or damage your tent, there are also warm and sunny days in Iceland.<\/p>\n

In summer it\u2019s light 24 hours a day, so you can easily sleep when it rains and start pedaling again when it’s dry.<\/p>\n

The sunsets can be awesome and the storm clouds are absolutely magnificent.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0spring and autumn, you can watch the northern lights, one of\u00a0the most dramatic nature spectacles on our planet.<\/p>\n

The weather is part of the fun, just accept the conditions and you will have a great time.<\/p>\n

Reason 4: Wild camping spots are everywhere.<\/h2>\n

If you like wild camping you will find stunning spots all over the island. There are no fences, neighbors or a single soul of whom you need to ask permission.<\/p>\n

Just pitch your tent where\u00a0ever you want and enjoy the scenery.<\/p>\n

Come prepared with a sturdy tent and good pegs for stormy and rainy days. Be sure to pack lots of food in your panniers because the next supermarket is far away.\u00a0 \u00a0Also, keep in mind that your Hobo stove will be useless because there won\u2019t be a single\u00a0tree in sight.<\/p>\n
