Biking touring blunders aren\u2019t just for newbies! \u00a0Even after 7+ years on the road, we managed to bungle our Japan tour; a few minor slip-ups left us lukewarm on the Land of the Rising Sun<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s what NOT to do on your next tour.
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mistake:<\/b> Heap on added stress at the start.<\/h2>\n

Bike tours are best when you ease into them.\u00a0 Taking on a new country where you don\u2019t speak the language and are not familiar with the customs can be overwhelming.<\/p>\n

We attempted to navigate the densely populated urban corridor between Osaka to Tokyo as our introduction to cycling in Japan.\u00a0\u00a0 It was a disaster.<\/p>\n

Solution:\u00a0<\/strong>If you\u2019re flying to a foreign country to tour, it\u2019s wise to make things as easy as possible in the beginning. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0If you can afford it, take a taxi from the airport and book yourself into a comfortable guesthouse.\u00a0 \u00a0If you\u2019re counting every penny, find a host through Warm Showers or Couchsurfing.\u00a0 Acclimate yourself to your new surroundings. \u00a0Re-assemble your bike in a relaxed environment.\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Get used to the new money; learn a few words of the local language.\u00a0 Then set off cycling.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re in a major urban area, you may want to consider busing it or taking a train into the countryside and starting your tour there.<\/p>\n

Mistake:\u00a0 Obsess over the budget.<\/h2>\n

Being frugal is fine.\u00a0 It allows you to tour for longer and experience more of the world.\u00a0 But when sticking to a budget takes the fun out of touring, it\u2019s time to re-evaluate.<\/p>\n

Japan is one of the world\u2019s costliest countries.\u00a0 We knew that going in.<\/p>\n

Having already spent time in expensive countries (we\u2019d just flown in from Australia which is one of the priciest places on the planet) we didn't think sticking to a tight budget in Japan would pose a problem.<\/p>\n

Turns out it was.\u00a0 Australia is all about solitude and wide open spaces.\u00a0 There\u2019s not much to tempt your consumer control when you\u2019re riding through the outback.<\/p>\n

Japan is more about culture and cuisine.\u00a0 It\u2019s tough to stick to a budget with so many temptations.<\/p>\n

By trying to stick to $20 a day we created a lot of stress and missed out on many of the wonderful things Japan has to offer.<\/p>\n

Solution:<\/strong>\u00a0 Give your budget some extra padding in costlier countries.\u00a0 Many cyclists on multi-year tours top up their savings during a working holiday in Australia<\/a>.\u00a0 Teaching English in Asia is another solid option for earning quick cash to fund a bike tour.<\/p>\n

Even if you\u2019re on a tight budget, go ahead and allow yourself a tiny splurge at least once a week.\u00a0 Then you can go back to a steady diet of ramen noodles.<\/p>\n

Mistake: Wrong season, stupid!<\/h2>\n

We\u2019d been warned that Japanese summers can be hot and humid.\u00a0 Having survived 90% humidity in Borneo, we didn\u2019t think Japan\u2019s climate could be all that bad.<\/p>\n

Wrong again.\u00a0 Turns out hot and sticky in mega cities is far more uncomfortable that hot and sticky in the jungle.<\/p>\n

Had we biked Japan in April and followed the cherry blossoms or cycled the country in autumn as the leaves change, we\u2019d have enjoyed sunshine and moderate temperatures.\u00a0 Instead, we got soaked in the seasonal rains and spent evenings swatting mosquitoes and lay awake at nights drenched in a pool of sweat.<\/p>\n

Solution:\u00a0<\/b>Listen to advice.\u00a0 Seasons matter more than you think.\u00a0 Sometimes it\u2019s fun to challenge yourself by biking in extreme heat or attempting \u2018impassable\u2019 roads in the wet season.\u00a0 Some fanatical cyclists may even enjoy diving into the Patagonian headwinds.\u00a0 But most of us are better off under more pleasant conditions.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Mistake: Attempt to do it all.<\/h2>\n

One of the best parts of bike touring is the ability to slow down and enjoy the world at a pleasurable pace.\u00a0 Stop for chats with the locals, snap photos of cows, settle into a campsite early and watch the sunset.<\/p>\n

When you\u2019re stressed about reaching your destination, all these joys slip away.\u00a0 That\u2019s what happened to us in Japan.\u00a0 First, we had<\/i> to reach Tokyo, then we had<\/i> to get to Hokkaido, and finally it really was<\/b> essential to get way down south to catch a ferry to Korea.<\/p>\n

Part of the problem was that we\u2019d succumbed to the \u201ceverybody\u2019s having more fun syndrome\u201d.\u00a0 Cyclist X had blogged about this amazing mountain road and we didn\u2019t want to miss that.\u00a0 Blogger Y had written about the fabulous coastal cycling, and Biker Z insisted we\u2019d be fools to miss out on the quiet country roads.<\/p>\n

Attempting to \u2018do it all,\u2019 generally results in frustration and fatigue.<\/p>\n

Solution: My advice is just to enjoy where you\u2019re at and not worry too much about \u2018missing out\u2019 on some \u2018amazing\u2019 spot.\u00a0 Remember, bike touring blog updates tend to be heavy on adventure and excitement and light on aggravations and annoyances.\u00a0 Take your tour at your own speed and just cycle the spots that really interest you.<\/p>\n

Mistake:\u00a0 Bad attitude.<\/h2>\n

By far the biggest mistake we made during our Japan tour was slipping into a negative mindset.\u00a0 Once you start moaning and groaning about all the things you hate about a place, your tour is doomed.<\/p>\n

Solution:<\/b>Annoyances and aggravations are inherent to any type of travel.\u00a0 The key to not becoming consumed by these inconveniences is acceptance.\u00a0 I\u2019m spending time on this site<\/a> to help get back on track.\u00a0 Feeling better already.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
