{"id":4595,"date":"2013-06-05T07:02:25","date_gmt":"2013-06-05T05:02:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/?p=4595"},"modified":"2020-01-02T05:17:57","modified_gmt":"2020-01-02T10:17:57","slug":"a-big-lap-australia-ride-recap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/2013\/06\/a-big-lap-australia-ride-recap\/","title":{"rendered":"A Big Lap:  Australia Ride Recap"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Our lap around Australia officially came to a close when we rolled into Cairns yesterday afternoon. \u00a0Friday morning we&#8217;ll zip to the airport and fly off to Japan for an adventure in the Land of the Rising Sun.<\/h3>\n<p><em>Here&#8217;s how the tour looks in numbers:<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Total Distance Cycled:11, 257 kilometers<\/h3>\n<h3>Flats: 29<\/h3>\n<h3>Total spent in 6 months: $2,176 Australian (2,092.22 USD)<\/h3>\n<p>**Almost all of this exclusively on FOOD! \u00a0Our budget for accommodation was ZERO.<\/p>\n<h3>Where we spent the night:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Couchsurfing: 20<\/li>\n<li>Warm Showers Hosts: 24<\/li>\n<li>Random invitations: 4<\/li>\n<li>Camping on people\u2019s property: 5<\/li>\n<li>School stay: 1<\/li>\n<li>Church stay: 1<\/li>\n<li>Airport stay: 1<\/li>\n<li>Wild (freedom) camping: 65<\/li>\n<li>Private campground: 7 \u00a0 ( These were all sponsored stays, meaning the campground owner kindly let us stay for free.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">Rants:<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>Queensland Drivers:<\/h3>\n<p>Some of the worst in the world. \u00a0Many won&#8217;t budge for cyclists and some even shout insults as they speed pass.<\/p>\n<h3>Lousy internet access:<\/h3>\n<p>Public libraries in many parts of OZ charge up to $10 an hour for internet use. \u00a0McDonald&#8217;s is your best bet.<\/p>\n<h3>Price gouging:<\/h3>\n<p>From food to electronics, Australians pay much more than the rest of the Western world. I know it&#8217;s a small market and transport adds to the price of goods, but why does everything have to be so expensive?<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">Raves:<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>Low key and relaxed:<\/h3>\n<p>Australians are very good- natured for the most part. \u00a0We appreciated their warm hospitality and easy going attitude towards wild camping.<\/p>\n<h3>Great network of backroads:<\/h3>\n<p>Take a look at Google maps and you&#8217;ll realize just how many roads and tracks there are in Australia. \u00a0This is a country that you could easily spend several years exploring. \u00a0While many cyclists do a straight shot down the center, there&#8217;s really much, much more to discover.<\/p>\n<h3>A country that has it all:<\/h3>\n<p>Empty deserts, a vast coastline, tropical wetlands, rolling farmland, cosmopolitan cities and even a few mountain ranges, yes Australia really is one of the most diverse countries on earth. \u00a0The real problem is deciding where to go.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our lap around Australia officially came to a close when we rolled into Cairns yesterday afternoon. \u00a0Friday morning we&#8217;ll zip to the airport and fly off to Japan for an adventure in the Land of the Rising Sun.
