{"id":4457,"date":"2013-04-25T08:11:04","date_gmt":"2013-04-25T06:11:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/?p=4457"},"modified":"2019-12-31T06:59:51","modified_gmt":"2019-12-31T11:59:51","slug":"tackling-the-tablelands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/2013\/04\/tackling-the-tablelands\/","title":{"rendered":"Tackling the Tablelands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cIs this the way to Hanging Rock?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you going to attempt to cycle all the way up there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, not attempt.\u00a0 I AM going to cycle up to Hanging Rock!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I was fed up with people doubting my abilities.\u00a0 Telling me a place was \u2018too far\u2019 or \u2018too remote\u2019 or \u2018too difficult\u2019 to get to.<\/p>\n<p>We WOULD cycle to Hanging Rock, dammit!<\/p>\n<p>And we did.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 922px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"cycling up to Hanging Rock NSW\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/1_8680270912_3f46e98c30_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"922\" height=\"615\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tackling one of the many steep hairpin turns on the ride up to Hanging Rock.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It <em>was<\/em> steep\u2014a 600m altitude gain in 10 kilometers.\u00a0 The well meaning woman in the SUV was right about that.\u00a0 But the Hanging Rock climb certainly was do-able.\u00a0 Reaching the top was merely a question of cranking the pedals slowly and consistently.<\/p>\n<h2>Debunking The Myth<\/h2>\n<p>Conquering Hanging Rock is exactly like cycling around the world.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>There\u2019s no need to be a super athlete. \u00a0You don&#8217;t have to possess rock hard calves and look good in lycra.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>All you have to do is wake up and hop on the bike. \u00a0You pedal for a couple of hours, snap some photos, take a break, eat far too much with no sense of guilt and then hop on the bike again and pedal some more. \u00a0And then you do that again and again and again.\u00a0 Eventually you\u2019ll reach the end of one continent and then another and then another.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Soon the countries will start piling up and confidence will increase.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>You\u2019ll know that with determination and persistence you\u2019ll always reach the top of the climb, the other side of the desert or the end of the continent.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"camping at hanging rock\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/1_8678863855_023ea5abca_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mission accomplished for the day&#8211; we set up camp near Hanging Rock.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Another Big Sky Country<\/h2>\n<p>Hanging Rock is situated in the New England Tablelands, a place of misty valleys, winding roads and impossibly green paddocks.\u00a0 The Tablelands is also known as the Big Sky Country. And with its cattle ranches and cowboys is not dissimilar to Montana.<\/p>\n<p>As far as I\u2019m concerned, the Tablelands is cycling perfection.\u00a0 First of all, it\u2019s remote without being completely isolated.\u00a0 The roads are lightly travelled and unpaved for much of the way.\u00a0 One could spend weeks bumping along old forestry tracks and rolling over fertile farmland.\u00a0 Every day or so you\u2019ll stumble across a small settlement with a friendly grocer and an Anglican church.\u00a0 There\u2019s sure to be a pub, too, where you can drop in for a refreshing pint.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<figure style=\"width: 922px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"bicycle touring in the tablelands NSW Australia\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/1_8663562245_04056057c6_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"922\" height=\"615\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lots of farmland and winding empty roads.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<figure style=\"width: 922px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"share the road\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/1_8679575946_30d88dd304_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"922\" height=\"615\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Share the Road!
