{"id":4401,"date":"2013-04-07T08:03:05","date_gmt":"2013-04-07T06:03:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/?p=4401"},"modified":"2019-12-31T06:51:31","modified_gmt":"2019-12-31T11:51:31","slug":"bicycle-touring-australia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/2013\/04\/bicycle-touring-australia\/","title":{"rendered":"Back to Oz"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cPlease step aside.\u00a0 We need more information about your visit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The request was pleasant enough, but I was still worried.\u00a0 Nobody likes to be stopped at immigration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHave you been to Australia before?\u201d \u201cYes, for three months back in 2012,\u201d I replied, trying to sound cool and casual.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you working in Australia? \u201cNo, of course not.\u00a0 Just cycling.\u00a0 It\u2019s a big country.\u00a0 We went down the west coast, now we\u2019re going back up the east coast&#8211;heading to Cairns, then on to Japan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI see.\u00a0 I\u2019ll let you in this time, but remember this is a tourist visa. \u00a0You&#8217;re not meant to be entering and exiting Australia on multiple trips. \u00a0An there&#8217;s\u00a0absolutely\u00a0 No working.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Relief<\/h2>\n<p>One hurdle down.\u00a0 Now we just had to clear customs.\u00a0 The Australians, like the New Zealanders, have strict rules about what can be brought into their country.\u00a0 \u00a0They\u2019ve got a reputation for being strict on cyclists.\u00a0 Any signs of dirt on the bikes and they\u2019re sent for thorough inspection.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre those mountain bikes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, they\u2019re touring bikes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny dirt, soil or plant products?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re clean, sir, very clean.\u00a0 We know the rules.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlright, go on through,\u201d and with that we were set free in Australia, without even a\u00a0cursory\u00a0inspection of the bikes.<\/p>\n<h2>Nighttime Dilema<\/h2>\n<p>It was late and I\u2019m married to a cheapskate.\u00a0 And you know what that means.\u00a0 We spent the night at the airport.<\/p>\n<p>Lucky for us, we\u2019d discovered <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sleepinginairports.net\/\">sleepinginairports.net<\/a>. \u00a0Apparently there are thousands of freeloaders like us worldwide.\u00a0 People who don\u2019t want to pay for a taxi or a hotel room and prefer to sleep at the airport.\u00a0 The site is chock full of reviews of the best nooks and crannies to curl up in to catch a little shut eye.<\/p>\n<p>We found a 4 star review by Annabella Rose suggesting we head to the Virgin domestic terminal and down the escalator to the Krispy Kreme outlet.\u00a0 We were promised a relatively quiet spot with no announcements and a long comfortable couch seating three.<\/p>\n<p>When we arrived, there were easily 50 people snoozing in the environs.\u00a0 Obviously, we were not the only ones to consult the <a href=\"http:\/sleepinginairports.net\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sleepinginairports.net site<\/a>. Within minutes, we had the mattresses set up and make shift tarp draped over the bike boxes.\u00a0 It was actually kind of cosy.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"sleeping at the melbourne airport\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/8546746919_aecd8f9715_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The price was right, but we&#8217;d have slept much better if they had dimmed the lights.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>By 5 AM workers in smart uniforms were trudging down the corridor.\u00a0 \u00a0Under his breath one of them muttered, \u201cThese goddamn backpackers are going too far, they\u2019ve set up a bloody tent.\u201d We quickly broke camp and shuffled outside to assemble the bikes and ride into Melbourne.\u00a0 Glenroy, actually.\u00a0 A nondescript suburb.<\/p>\n<h2>Road Weary<\/h2>\n<p>Life on the road wears you down.\u00a0 It\u2019s not so much the physical aspect of cranking the pedals&#8211;that you learn to deal with fairly quickly.\u00a0 What\u2019s exhausting is the constant change of people and scenery.<\/p>\n<p>In my perfect world, I\u2019d cycle nine months a year, and take three off.\u00a0 I know, that probably sounds self-indulgent. \u00a0Perhaps even lazy.<\/p>\n<p>But that\u2019s the truth.\u00a0 You need time off the bikes to rekindle a love of touring.\u00a0 Otherwise it can become monotony and routine.<\/p>\n<p>Glenroy turned out to be a good spot for some down time.\u00a0 It\u2019s boring, which suited us perfectly.\u00a0 Our Warm Showers hosts couldn\u2019t have been better.\u00a0 Peter and Maggie are laidback and easy going.\u00a0 They didn\u2019t mind that I made a massive mess in the kitchen.\u00a0 (As long as something tasty came of it!) We could be just who we are, no need to impress or share tales of adventure.\u00a0 Best of all, there was Zeus, \u00a0the family bulldog.\u00a0 Zeus and I went walking every evening.\u00a0 Life felt pretty normal.\u00a0 The routine was comforting.<\/p>\n<h2>The End of Ease<\/h2>\n<p>We might have stayed longer (Peter and Maggie permitting), but Cairns was calling.\u00a0 We\u2019d booked a flight to Japan in June and there were still many kilometers to cover up the east coast to Queensland. To be honest, it was tough to get back on the bikes.\u00a0 We even had a false start.\u00a0 We set off one morning, biked about 5 kilometers and came back.\u00a0 Peter and Maggie didn\u2019t mind.\u00a0 I baked a loaf of bread , took Zeus out for a walk, fixed some enchiladas and we said goodbye again the following day. That time we really left.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 427px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"my koga world traveller in melbounre\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/8579688944_036d94270c_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"427\" height=\"640\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Koga proudly posing in front of a Melbourne mural.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Horrific Hills<\/h2>\n<p>There are several hundred hills separating Melbourne from Sydney.\u00a0 After New Zealand, you\u2019d have thought we\u2019d be used to climbs.\u00a0 Not so.\u00a0 I doubt I\u2019ll ever embrace the lung-bursting, thigh-burning pain and suffering of successive hills.\u00a0 Give me a nice 4,000 meter pass to conquer!\u00a0 Now, that\u2019s fun.<\/p>\n<p>There was one fairly flat stretch out of the last 800 kilometers: The East Gippsland Rail Trail!\u00a0 That was fun. \u00a0Rolling through the red gum forest we trundled across timber bridges as we made our way across the Snowy River floodplain.\u00a0 Late in the evening we even caught sight of some wallabies (or were they kangaroos?) hopping across the trail. Even though it was Easter weekend, the trail was blessedly deserted.<\/p>\n<p>The camping couldn\u2019t have been better.\u00a0 We set up the tent in a wide clearing and settled in for the night as the chirping of the birds morphed into the screeching of insects.
