{"id":4092,"date":"2013-02-09T02:59:58","date_gmt":"2013-02-09T01:59:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/?p=4092"},"modified":"2019-12-31T02:09:53","modified_gmt":"2019-12-31T07:09:53","slug":"a-forgotten-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/2013\/02\/a-forgotten-world\/","title":{"rendered":"A Forgotten World"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One reason bicycle touring is so beloved is that it drags us away from all the distractions of daily life.<\/p>\n<p>While out riding, we stop obsessing over Twitter followers, Facebook likes and the latest i-phone apps. \u00a0\u00a0Being out on the bike, we distance ourselves from the latest political upheavals and forget about Islamist militants in Mali, budget cuts in Europe and the widening gap between rich and poor in the US.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<figure style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"freedom of cycling\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/1_8442438813_b3a6c158c3_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"384\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">No distractions here!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4>Here&#8217;s the spot!<\/h4>\n<p>Need to get away from it all?\u00a0 I can\u2019t think of a better place than the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nzcycletrail.com\/forgotten-world-highway\">Forgotten World Highway<\/a>.\u00a0 This New Zealand North Island ride is 180 kilometers of remote countryside miles from anywhere.\u00a0 There are no supermarkets or souvenir shops, no tour buses and hardly any traffic.<\/p>\n<p>What you <em>will<\/em> find is sheep and cows.\u00a0 The odd farmhouse, eerie settlements long deserted, and deep gorges covered in native forest.\u00a0 There\u2019s even one rogue township (Whangamomona) which has asserted its independence and claims to be a Republic.<\/p>\n<p>The Forgotten World Highway, I should point out, runs through some of New Zealand\u2019s most rugged and scenic countryside.\u00a0 This is not a ride for those unprepared to give the pedals some serious cranking!\u00a0 There are hills, my friend, and lots of \u2018em!<\/p>\n<p>We warmed up for the Forgotten World on a nice stretch of coastal cycleway near New Plymouth.\u00a0 We\u2019d just said goodbye to our Warm Showers hosts, Rhys and Diana.\u00a0 It was an eventful departure, with Diana bursting in at the last moment with fresh rabbit roadkill for Gerald, the family dog.<\/p>\n<p>Those are the travel moments that always stick with me.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"warmshowers hosts rhys and diana\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/1_8443363458_de90964b3a_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"384\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Magical moments with Warm Showers hosts Diana and Rhys.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<figure style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"cycling the coastal cycleway near New Plymouth\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/1_8443353520_9415f8f442_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"384\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">An easy start to the day on the coastal cycle path near New Plymouth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4>Another World!<\/h4>\n<p>With the easy cycleway cruising behind us, we headed into the hills.\u00a0 The traffic soon petered out and we found ourselves alone with flocks of bleating sheep and curious cows wandering across the road.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the Forgotten World Highway is paved&#8211;which is good because you need a nice smooth surface to tackle all the steep climbs.<\/p>\n<p>In a couple of spots, the NZ government hasn\u2019t gotten around to pouring tar.\u00a0 You wouldn\u2019t think 15 kilometers of gravel would be a big deal.\u00a0 After all, If gravel is well packed it can be almost as good as a sealed road.<\/p>\n<p>But when somebody from the highway department has just dumped a big load of fresh gravel and left it to be worked in by passing vehicles, you\u2019re in trouble.<\/p>\n<p>The bikes are almost impossible to control on such a surface.\u00a0 It\u2019s like cycling on marbles.\u00a0 The tires (even our excellent Schwalbes) quickly lost their grip.\u00a0 \u00a0It takes all your concentration not to tumble.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"cycling the forgotten world highway NZ\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/1_8443358330_b72692637e_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"384\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Idyllic! At least till the rough stuff set in!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 4px solid black;\" title=\"top of the saddle \" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/1_8443403164_1957e10a77_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"384\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That night we pitched up at a farm run by sweet faced grandmother.\u00a0 She was a recent widow.\u00a0 Lonely, I suppose, but unwilling to leave the land she loved.\u00a0 Before dawn the next morning, she was out in her wellington boots scattering feed for the chickens and milking the cows.<\/p>\n<p>After our usual porridge (better these days with the addition of coconut flakes), we hopped on our bikes and bid her farewell.<\/p>\n<p>We bumped along the gravel road, surrounded by emerald \u00a0green pastures.\u00a0 We made good time up and over another steep climb.\u00a0 In fact, it was up and down all day long.\u00a0 We crossed paths with a couple other cyclists.\u00a0 They were pushing decidedly less loaded bikes and I felt the slightest tinge of envy as they roared past.<\/p>\n<p>But when it gets right down to it, I\u2019m not willing to give up my little extras (big computer, pillow, yoga mat, extra clothes, serious stocks of food) for a lighter load.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 4px solid black;\" title=\"bike touring on the forgotten world highway\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/8442327331_77a5f36dca_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"384\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 4px solid black;\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/8443407072_4d5740a770_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"384\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<figure style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"amaya cycliong the forgotten world highway in New Zealand\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/8443645778_27cb1ee982_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"384\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">This is the good gravel! The stuff that&#8217;s been worn smooth over months of use.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Finally we made it over the last big hill before Taumarunui\u00a0 (and the end of the Forgotten World Highway) and called it quits for the day.\u00a0 Our legs were heavy with fatigue and it was time to fire up the stove and prepare a big plate of pasta.<\/p>\n<p>We discovered an abandoned farmhouse and decided to set camp up out back.\u00a0 The water tap was still flowing, so we filled up our Ortlieb bladder, attached the shower nozzle, stripped down and rinsed off a couple days of sweat and grime.\u00a0 It was with great satisfaction that we dove into the tent for a well-deserved rest.<\/p>\n<p>A storm front rolled in overnight.\u00a0 You can experience all four seasons in a day, that\u2019s what they say about New Zealand weather.\u00a0 Our final Forgotten World Highway kilometers were cranked out hunkered down in a deluge.<\/p>\n<p>We rolled into Taumarunui soaked to the bone.\u00a0 The rest of the day was spent huddled in the public library surfing the internet on the free WiFi.\u00a0 We were back to the real world.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<figure style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"biking the forgotten world highway in NZ\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/8442441489_df25e54fd1_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"384\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ah, the simplicity of bike touring.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One reason bicycle touring is so beloved is that it drags us away from all the distractions of daily life.
