The Eyre Peninsula has it all according to the Australia Tourism Board.<\/p>\n<p>Given our shoestring budget, I knew the last two were out.\u00a0 But those first four, well, they sounded pretty damn enticing after the bleakness of the Nullarbor Plain.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, I had high hopes for this little-visited corner of South Australia.\u00a0 That is, until we butted bikes with a less-than-tempting trio: <strong>headwinds, flies and forest fires<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"_wp_link_placeholder\" data-wplink-edit=\"true\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 4px solid black;\" title=\"watch out for kangaroos bicycle touring in Australia\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/8206641077_75f34d9ae0_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"384\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>First came the wind.\u00a0 It batted us about as soon as we set off from Ceduna.\u00a0 Headwinds are the morale sinking, depression inducing, curse causing scourge of any cyclist\u2019s existence.\u00a0 In case that\u2019s not clear\u2014HEADWINDS SUCK!<\/p>\n<p>Near day\u2019s end, we rolled the bikes into a metal shed on the beach north of Streaky Bay and crumpled onto the floor in exhaustion.\u00a0 Fighting winds is tough work.\u00a0 And all the more difficult because your enemy is invisible.\u00a0 Not like a big steep menacing mountain.\u00a0 That kind of opponent you can size up and conquer.\u00a0 Not so with the wind.<\/p>\n<p>We were fortunate to have a shed to sleep in. The coastal winds might have done with our tent what Sandy did to New York.\u00a0 I\u2019m afraid it wouldn\u2019t have been a pretty sight.\u00a0 We weer most grateful for a real roof over our heads, even if it was one that clattered and banged.<\/p>\n<p>Later we stumbled out on the beach for what turned out to be a magnificent sunset.\u00a0 A gratifying and glorious moment that strengthened us to keep dueling with the elements.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"sunset on the eyre peninsula\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/8205322068_ff02f64161_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"383\" \/><\/p>\n<h6 class=\"wp-caption-dd\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Another beautiful Australian sunset! Just reward after our day dueling with the wind.<\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Next came the flies.\u00a0 The headwinds keep the flies at bay, so they\u2019re useful in that sense.\u00a0 Australian flies excel at breeding and diversifying.\u00a0 I\u2019ve read that the continent has over 6,000 species of the annoying creatures.\u00a0 Unless you are of particularly stoic stock or don\u2019t mind spending your days ingesting unwanted critters, a head net is essential gear in Australia.\u00a0 We\u2019ve got fly-proof net jackets with hoods to keep the flies at bay.<\/p>\n<p>The jackets can get a bit hot and they\u2019re scratchy but the alternative is playing host to hundreds of bothersome flies.<\/p>\n<p>But here\u2019s the real problem.\u00a0 Bicycle touring is all about being up close to nature.\u00a0 But with the head net on, it\u2019s like viewing the world through a Burka.\u00a0 Our vision is seriously impaired.\u00a0 It\u2019s like having your head pressed up against a screen door all day long.\u00a0 Headwinds or head nets\u2014I\u2019m not sure which one is worse.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"cycling the eyre peninsula south australia\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/8207752680_a74c86ec7f_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"383\" \/><\/p>\n<h6 class=\"wp-caption-dd\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Where the outback meets the sea!<\/span><\/h6>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"cycling south australia\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/8212737385_a7910b5401_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/p>\n<h6 class=\"wp-caption-dd\">Sheep country!<\/h6>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/8212701297_1d1afeb992_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"384\" \/><\/p>\n<h6 class=\"wp-caption-dd\">A friendly sheep farmer on the Eyre Peninsula who spontaneously invited us in for the night.<\/h6>\n<p>Then came the forest fires.\u00a0 In hope of escaping the wind, we decided to cut inland.\u00a0 The interior of the peninsula was dry and dusty, mostly used for sheep and cattle ranching.\u00a0 As we cycled into the tiny town of Locke (okay maybe not cycled in\u2026the town\u2019s friendly mayor actually gave us a lift the last 6 kilometers or so\u2026headwinds again), we discovered the small farming community had been put on Catastrophic Fire Watch.<\/p>\n<p>Temperatures had soared up to 100+ Fahrenheit (42 Celsius) and the land was tinderbox dry.\u00a0 \u00a0Winds the following day were forecast at 45-65 KMPH with gusts up to 85 KMPH.\u00a0 (Sadly not blowing in our favor.) \u00a0\u00a0Schools had been closed and farmers were prohibited from harvesting for fear their heavy machinery might spark a flame.\u00a0 We pegged down the tent extra tight and hoped for the best.<\/p>\n<p>The mighty wind raged throughout the night, but our Big Agnes fought back with gusto, just as she had in Patagonia.\u00a0 A few fires were set off in the region.\u00a0 Mostly further south near Port Lincoln, where we might have been trapped had we followed our original route.\u00a0 We were safe and sound in Locke.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"camping in Locke South Australia\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/8216260076_5856085dae_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"384\" \/><\/p>\n<h6 class=\"wp-caption-dd\">Hunkering down in the community campsite in Locke.
