{"id":3875,"date":"2012-10-07T08:41:10","date_gmt":"2012-10-07T06:41:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/?p=3875"},"modified":"2019-12-30T09:49:48","modified_gmt":"2019-12-30T14:49:48","slug":"between-dawn-and-dusk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/2012\/10\/between-dawn-and-dusk\/","title":{"rendered":"Between Dawn and Dusk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My wristwatch alarm begins buzzing at 3:45 AM. \u00a0Its high pitched insistence startles me from a deep sleep.\u00a0 My muscles ache with exhaustion.\u00a0 3:45 , I\u2019m sure you will agree, is an ungodly hour to rise.<\/p>\n<p>The Australian bush, where we are camped, is still and silent, the sky above a carpet of stars.\u00a0 The air is cool and crisp, almost autumnal.\u00a0 My sleeping bag is draped casually over my shoulders, shielding me from the early morning chill.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<figure style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"Bush Camp off Highway One in Western Australia\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/8061366139_6a9026cd4f_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"384\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bush Camp off Highway One in Western Australia after a long day on the road.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The freshness of the day will fade quickly.\u00a0 Of this I am only too aware.\u00a0 Within a few hours the temperature will climb into the 80\u2019s, then the 90\u2019s.\u00a0 By early afternoon it will surely top 100.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 4px solid black;\" title=\"cycling western australia\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/8058955417_644af14cec_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"384\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The desert scrub will provide little shelter from the unforgiving sun.\u00a0 By late morning, the winds will most certainly begin to gust.\u00a0 The Big Wet is on its way. \u00a0The eight month period without rainfall will come to an end. \u00a0The Western Australia climate is unpredictable this time of year.\u00a0 Headwinds will turn a reasonable 150 kilometer ride on pancake flat terrain into a hellish 10 hours of pedaling.<\/p>\n<p>We will, for a brief moment during the worst heat of the day, contemplate hunkering down under one of the rare acacias.\u00a0 Calling it a day after a mere 80 kilometers.\u00a0 But there is water to worry about and diminishing food supplies to consider.<\/p>\n<p>In the end, we will push on, hopeful that the winds will change.\u00a0 \u00a0We will be disappointed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<figure style=\"width: 384px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" style=\"border: 4px solid black;\" title=\"arid landscape western Australia\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/8058877004_748938b028_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"576\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Not much shelter from the elements in these barren parts.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Worth the\u00a0effort?<\/h3>\n<p>A recent blog follower made this comment:<\/p>\n<p><em>All the bicycle travel diaries online use words like &#8220;beautiful&#8221; and &#8220;breathtaking&#8221; a lot, but the photos are anything but beautiful, why would I want to spend weeks and months staring at the pavement?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>At times, these accusations about bicycle touring are accurate.\u00a0 Monotonous, dull, boring, repetitive.\u00a0 Those are the words most people would use to describe the 577 kilometers separating Broome from Port Hedland.<\/p>\n<p>But sunrise and sunset are nothing short of magical.
