Soft pastels brighten into a blazing blue, a gentle breeze rolls in from the sea and the air is fresh with possibility.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 4px solid black;\" title=\"cycling on the island of Sumbawa, Indonesia\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8421\/7837462474_51560a7817_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"384\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I savor these moments of peace and serenity.\u00a0 Soon I will be left panting, my heart pounding, my legs shaking as I climb some of the steepest hills on the planet.\u00a0 But for now there is nothing more pressing than watching the clouds drift past, fisherman cast their lines and children trot off to school.<\/p>\n<p>We island hop from Bali to Lombok to Sumbawa, each dot of land more beautiful than the last.<\/p>\n<p>In the month of August, Bali is hectic and crowded with swarms of European holiday-makers.\u00a0\u00a0 We give Kuta Beach a wide berth and head up to the highlands where the air is cool and crisp.\u00a0 This side of Bali is not exactly quiet, but bearable.\u00a0 The views out over the lakes are stunning and the Hindu temples intriguing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 4px solid black;\" title=\"beautiful Bali\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8457\/7910774462_1de412c18e_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"384\" \/><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 384px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8301\/7746488010_9ae1e0d7f4_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"576\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">A very colorful festival was going at one of the local temples near Ubud. I really wanted to go crazy snapping photos, but locals here are understandably hesitant about being photographed. (There are just too many tourists here on Bali.) One kind mother consented to having a photo taken of her son.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4>Beyond Bali<\/h4>\n<p>In search of more serene surroundings, we push on to Lombok.\u00a0 Once past the busy beach town of Senggigi , tourists once again become a rarity (which is how we like it).<\/p>\n<p>Rural life on Lombok revolves, quite naturally, around the sea.\u00a0 It\u2019s a tough life, but the proud fishermen seem content as they paddle out to sea.\u00a0 Children frolic in the waves, old women herd cows along the beach and young mothers work hard to meet their family\u2019s needs.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"sunset stroll on lombok\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8433\/7841475372_b23e829e41_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"384\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">I caught his retiree and his dog out for a beautiful sunset stroll by the sea on our first evening in Lombok.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 4px solid black;\" title=\"a proud fisherman on Lombok\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8305\/7841684610_3678c72d37_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"576\" \/><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"children at play on Lombok\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7110\/7841464600_3d8650142d_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"384\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The kids seem so joyful as they romp around on the beach. Early one morning I stumbled across this woman leading her herd out to pasture.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 384px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"woman at work on lombok\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8284\/7841579212_f8d3c5deb0_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"576\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">This woman appeared to be gathering sand and gravel from the beach--a tough task.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 384px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"bicycle touring on Lombok\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8029\/7904607404_dc20d3cab4_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"576\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The hills are almost constant. Up and down from dawn till dusk.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"bike touring on Lombok\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8444\/7837456174_d7207656fd_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"241\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Plenty of hills on Lombok but great sea views to take your mind off all the hard work.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4>It gets even better<\/h4>\n<p>Sumbawa, a tiny island hardly anybody has even heard of let alone visited, turns out to be the highlight of the trio. \u00a0After 4 hours on the ferry from Lombok we pull into the port during the worst of the searing mid-day heat. \u00a0The land is scorched and\u00a0barren\u00a0but somehow beautiful.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 4px solid black;\" title=\"the island of Sumbawa, Indonesia\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8298\/7841650258_273862bf80_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"241\" \/><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"sumbawa\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8288\/7841456720_a0d12acb75_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"384\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Not exactly an ideal time to be trekking across the island with a load of firewood. This was our first glimpse of the beautiful island of Sumbawa.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"fishing village on Sumbawa, Indonesia\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8426\/7837460134_d0d6185584_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"384\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">This fishing village appeared pitifully poor but what a view!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 384px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"Watermelon Girl\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8427\/7841589346_042df4eafc_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"576\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ramadhan was still in full swing which made meals a problem. Late afternoon food sellers begin wandering the streets in preparation for breaking the fast at sunset. This hawker appeared a bit young.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"bicycle touring on Sumbawa\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8297\/7841592796_5676437801_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"384\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">A serene stretch of coastline on Sumbawa.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\">Perfectly Content<\/h4>\n<p>Indonesia is shaping up to be on of my\u00a0favorite\u00a0countries in Asia for bicycle touring. \u00a0Its scenery is incredibly diverse--it's got both mountains and the sea, desert-like landscapes and tropical ones, too. \u00a0The Indonesian people couldn't be friendlier--they're always ready with big smiles and warm greetings. \u00a0And the climate's not too bad either, the highlands are refreshingly cool and ocean breezes make for\u00a0pleasant\u00a0cycling along the coast.<\/p>\n<p>Flores is next up. \u00a0 An island so hilly, says\u00a0our Lonely Planet,\u00a0it's suitable only for cyclists of Tour de France\u00a0caliber.
