{"id":3788,"date":"2012-07-28T00:58:47","date_gmt":"2012-07-27T22:58:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/?p=3788"},"modified":"2019-12-30T03:58:58","modified_gmt":"2019-12-30T08:58:58","slug":"the-streets-of-surabaya","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/2012\/07\/the-streets-of-surabaya\/","title":{"rendered":"The Streets of Surabaya"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>One of the best parts<\/strong> of an extended bike tour is the luxury of time.\u00a0 Time to take it slow, drink in the landscape and stop for a chat.<\/p>\n<p>But sometimes bureaucracy forces you to slow down.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s our current situation as we twiddle our thumbs in Surabaya waiting for extensions to our Indonesian visas.<\/p>\n<p>Taking time off the bikes in a big city (over 2 million) wouldn\u2019t have been our first choice. (Frankly, a beach on Bali sounds more enticing.)\u00a0 But we\u2019re making the best of a frustrating situation.<\/p>\n<p>The call of prayer from the neighborhood mosque wakes me well before dawn each morning.\u00a0 I crawl out of bed, grab my camera and head out the door to shoot some photos.\u00a0 Here\u2019s a taste of what I find on the friendly streets of Surabaya&#8230;<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" style=\"border: 4px solid black;\" title=\"Hello Mister!\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/7642057866_ca1d4bfd02_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"384\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hello Mister!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h6>As I roam the streets I&#8217;m greeted with a steady stream of \u00a0&#8220;Hello Mister!&#8221; \u00a0 \u00a0Women are <em>mister<\/em>, too. \u00a0Even in a major city people are friendly and curious. \u00a0This is early morning traffic in Surabaya&#8230;cars, motorbikes, scooters, rickshaws, bicycles and plenty of pedestrians plying the roads.<\/h6>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<figure style=\"width: 384px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/worldbiking\/sets\/72157629677718024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" style=\"border: 4px solid black;\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/7628326316_820dfa0178_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"576\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rickshaw Ride to School<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: left;\">Cycle rickshaws are a very common mode of transport in this part of Indonesia.<br \/>\nThis girl is headed off to school in her pristine white uniform. Highly impractical for such a dusty climate.<\/h6>\n<figure style=\"width: 384px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" style=\"border: 4px solid black;\" title=\"Daydreaming\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/7642434674_ac0d8a517f_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"576\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Daydreaming<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And some people get around under their own steam. Given the heat, pollution and level of danger on the roads, \u00a0bicycles are surprisingly popular in Surabaya. \u00a0The cool kids ride around on\u00a0fluorescent\u00a0fixies.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" style=\"border: 4px solid black;\" title=\"Rest for the Rickshaw Man\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/7642481416_817517a589_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"384\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rest for the Rickshaw Man<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Rickshaw drivers have a pretty rough life. \u00a0Many have no regular home and actually live in their rickshaws. You can see them at all hours of the day and night dozing in their machines.\u00a0Fortunately, they are able to bathe at the local mosque.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 384px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" style=\"border: 4px solid black;\" title=\"Family Affair\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/7648258648_4007d9c027_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"576\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Family Affair<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As soon as a family gets a little money, they invest in a scooter. \u00a0Scooters are not solo modes of transport in this part of the world. \u00a0Babies are balanced in front and older kids grab on to the back. \u00a0I&#8217;ve seen families of 5 darting around on a tiny Honda.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 384px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" style=\"border: 4px solid black;\" title=\"In a perfect world!\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/7628940854_6aa17bd1bd_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"576\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">In a perfect world!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Surabaya may be a massive city of millions, but in the quiet neighborhoods knows as Kampungs you&#8217;re it&#8217;s a different world. \u00a0 In these crowded lanes children toss around a ball,\u00a0housewives\u00a0gossip and vendors go door to door plying their wares. \u00a0Everybody knows everybody else and a Bule (how Indonesians refer to we foreigners) certainly does stand out.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 384px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" style=\"border: 4px solid black;\" title=\"Fresh Vegetables\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/7648242324_7e63a06be6_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"576\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fresh Vegetables<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There&#8217;s really no need to\u00a0leave\u00a0the neighborhood since\u00a0everything\u00a0you need comes right to the doorstep. \u00a0There&#8217;s the bread man with his\u00a0distinctive\u00a0horn,\u00a0the\u00a0veg man who shouts out &#8216;Sayur, Sayur&#8217; the donut guy, the recycling guru, the trinket seller, all the\u00a0various\u00a0food carts and of course the ice cream man.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 427px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Off to the Mosque\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/7648956512_f5c943af7d_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"427\" height=\"640\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Off to the Mosque<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There seems to be a mosque on every corner in the crowded neighborhood where we&#8217;re staying.\u00a0\u00a0I pass at least 10 on my morning walks. \u00a0By 4AM many families are up and about preparing a meal (known as sufhoor) to break the fast at sunrise.<\/p>\n<p>As I finish up this photo essay, it&#8217;s nearing 6AM. \u00a0A late start for my morning walk. \u00a0Surabaya&#8217;s streets will be busy now. \u00a0It&#8217;s time to grab the camera and head out the door.<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_5_0_3_1343429342485_1177\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the best parts of an extended bike tour is the luxury of time.\u00a0 Time to take it slow, drink in the landscape and stop for a chat.
