{"id":3725,"date":"2012-07-02T09:01:23","date_gmt":"2012-07-02T07:01:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/?p=3725"},"modified":"2019-12-30T03:42:29","modified_gmt":"2019-12-30T08:42:29","slug":"biking-borneo-adventures-east-kalimantan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/2012\/07\/biking-borneo-adventures-east-kalimantan\/","title":{"rendered":"Into the jungle: biking Borneo gets better (and worse!)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m not normally a jungle person.<\/p>\n<p>Pedaling through places with steamy equatorial climates\u2014Guyana, Gabon, Borneo\u2014ranks just above biking through China&#8217;s factory belts or on\u00a0Southern California&#8217;s\u00a08-lane freeways.<\/p>\n<p>Jungles scare me. \u00a0The thick tangles of vegetation feel forbidding.\u00a0 The constant buzz of insects somehow threatening.\u00a0 And the rainforest canopy so thick overhead slightly menacing.\u00a0 My body slick with sweat adds to the sense of \u00a0venturing into a wild and untamed place.<\/p>\n<p>So it was with a tinge of trepidation that I pedaled out of Tanjungselor, in East Kalimantan.\u00a0 The Indonesian part of Borneo promised to be far more adventurous than what we\u2019d experienced in Sabah and Sarawak\u2014Malaysia\u2019s share of the island (the world\u2019s third largest \u2014I\u2019ll remind you\u2014lest you\u2019re wondering why we\u2019re <em>still <\/em>biking around Borneo).<\/p>\n<p>Not unusually, we weren&#8217;t quite sure what lay ahead. \u00a0Cycle Laos or Cambodia or even Indonesia&#8217;s more popular islands such as Java or Bali and a google search will come back with loads of results. \u00a0Not the case with Borneo. \u00a0The only information we\u2019d been able to scrounge up \u00a0came from LP\u2019s thorntree forum.\u00a0 A guy named Robin had this to say:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230;the sun is intense and the roads are almost never flat, in fact there are no real hills or climbs but the road is forever steep up and down, up and down, up and down so it makes for some tough riding.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Robin was right about those ups and downs.\u00a0 The ABSOLUTE <strong>steepest hills I have ever encountered<\/strong>.\u00a0 No photo can really convey how menacing those climbs really are.\u00a0 Tears spilled more than once.\u00a0 We\u2019d zig-zag our way up to give our knees a little relief.\u00a0 But when a palm oil truck is barreling down on you from above, it\u2019s time to dart out of the way.\u00a0 Starting back up again is one of the toughest things I&#8217;ve done in all 6 years of cycling.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s how cycling East Kalimantan has panned out so far:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<figure style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"biking Borneo\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/7470780608_5d8e3c4c84_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"384\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The road started out nice and smooth, which was good given the steepness of the climbs.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 384px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Cycling slick roads in Kalimantan.\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/7471385292_e29d9bd633_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"576\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fun going down, but pretty damn scary after a rain shower. I always brake which means Eric beats me to the top of the next hill. I reckon I end up expending around 20% more effort than he does.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"Camping at the church in Berau.\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/7471209206_21c2d2e30e_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"433\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">We were thankful to find this church on the outskirts of town. The pastor welcomed us in, we pitched up in the sanctuary and his wife cooked up the vegetables we had in our bags. \u00a0I was much too exhausted to even think about preparing a meal.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<figure style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"Sunrise in East kalimantan\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/7471199480_bae4a1ac2f_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"241\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">After a grueling day getting to Berau, this amazing sunrise the following day gave us a little inspiration to keep on pedaling.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"motorcycle shop in East Kalimantan\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/7471178050_9d3212112a_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"384\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Not much was open early on a Sunday morning. They were steep. Way too steep for fully loaded bikes. The road was rough too. Huge stones. We accepted a lift for the last few kilometers into a small settlement.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<figure style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"Attracting a crowd in a small village in East Kalimantan\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/7471154246_ab2ef4eebd_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"384\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">When we stopped for the night in this East Kalimantan village around 100 kilometers from Berau a small crowd quickly gathered. We pitched our tent on somebody&#8217;s doorstep and enjoyed a relatively peaceful night&#8217;s sleep. No electricity in this areas means locals use noisy generators. All.Night.Long. The albino guy on the motorbike is the local English teacher.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<figure style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"flat fixing in Borneo\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/7471331642_f80eb0c8d5_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"384\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">We&#8217;ve rarely had such a streak of bad luck with punctures as we did in East Kalimantan. Whenever somebody on a motorbike stopped to gawk, Eric quickly pressed them into service finding punctures and pumping up the tire. All happily obliged.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<figure style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"restaurant camping\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/7471279592_1b2e73f84e_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"384\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The owners of this roadside restaurant catering to truckers graciously invited us to pitch the tent in the dining area. Not exactly a peaceful night&#8217;s rest. In spite of the road being dangerous, windy and rutted, trucks continued to pass all night long. Once it got dark the generator kicked in adding to the racket.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<figure style=\"width: 384px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"outdoor shower\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/7471810702_03b8d77874_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"576\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">I just love these outdoor showers. Nothing better than washing away the day&#8217;s grime in a cool stream. This one was just below the main road and not too private. Steep hills, rough roads and a few smooth sections and lots and lots of punctures. Slowly he got up the nerve to check out the foreigners on bikes. By the end of the meal he was tossing around his ball, the novelty of cycle tourists in remote places already have worn off.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"Dayak Village near Wahau, Kalimantan\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/7477243760_492ae8b513_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"384\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Near Wahau, we came acroos this Dayak village on the banks of the Kedang Kepala River. These people are off to feed the pigs, a daily ritual. The pigs are isolated on the far side of the river. Each morning locals cross to feed &#8220;their&#8221; pigs, who apparently know exactly who their master is. A rather hygienic way to do pig farming. Much nicer than when the animals just roam around the village routing in the garbage.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<figure style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"Double Punctures\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/7485035036_72b7d22c62_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"384\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Blame it on the cheap Chinese-made inner tubes&#8230;punctures every few kilometers was too much to handle combined with the heat, humidity and rough roads.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<figure style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"lending a hand\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/7485084822_bfbaa92251_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"384\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">A sense of solidarity on Borneo&#8217;s rough roads. These truckers stop to help and we eventually hitch a lift. Something I do not regret in the least.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<figure style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"More restaurant camping\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/7482175882_7bb24fcbb6_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"384\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Heavy rains slowed us down and we couldn&#8217;t quite make it all the way to the city of Bontang. We ended up spending the night at this roadside restaurant. A great spot and they turned off the generator at midnight, so we got a few hours of peace and quiet.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"lunch \" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/7482374928_17bea9549d_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"384\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Finally we made it to our couchsurfing host in Bontang. We were thoroughly exhausted and decided to take a few days off the bike. This snail soup was just one course of the lovely meal that awaited us at Dian and Niki&#8217;s place.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Final Verdict<\/h3>\n<p>Looking back at all these photos, I&#8217;m struck by the beauty of the landscapes and kindness of the people. \u00a0I&#8217;m still not a jungle person. \u00a0But I have to say Borneo has been quite an adventure.<\/p>\n<p>And <em>fun<\/em>, in spite of all the suffering.<\/p>\n<p>Type II fun, as blog reader <a href=\"http:\/\/inmagicland.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gili Rosenberg<\/a> would call it. \u00a0 The kind\u00a0you don\u2019t enjoy at the time, only in retrospect.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t have to be having fun to have fun,\u201d as they say.<\/p>\n<p>Another 1,000+ \u00a0kilometers to go in Borneo! \u00a0Then we&#8217;ll hop a ferry to Java and continue down the archipelago\u00a0exploring\u00a0Bali, Lombok, Sumbawa and East Timor before we catch a flight to Australia on 11 September.
