Gauchito and other Argentine oddities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We travel because we\u2019re bored with the familiar.\u00a0 We\u2019re fed up with spotting a Starbucks on every street corner.\u00a0 We can\u2019t take another day of banal office gossip around the photo copier.\u00a0 We\u2019re tired of seeing \u00a0the same old big box shops springing up in the suburbs.<\/p>\n<p>Finally we make our escape from the known.\u00a0 A foreign country, fresh faces, different ways of doing things.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_355\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-355\" style=\"width: 375px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/travel-guide-books.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-355\" title=\"travel-guide-books\" src=\"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/travel-guide-books.jpg\" alt=\"travel-guide-books\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-355\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Time for a travel escape!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In a lot of ways, Argentina\u2019s just like Europe or North America.\u00a0 They\u2019ve got their McDonald\u2019s fast food joints and Carrefour supermarkets.\u00a0 Faded jeans, a tight gap t-shirt and a pair of Nikes is pretty normal attire.\u00a0 People buzz around in Toyota Hilux pick-ups and tiny Renault Clios.<\/p>\n<p>Argentina does, however, have its own way of doing things.\u00a0 Here are a few odd, unusual, uniquely Argentine customs that pop to mind.<\/p>\n<p>Mate.<\/p>\n<p>Argentines are absolutely addicted to the stuff.\u00a0 They all run around totting a <em>mate gourda, <\/em>sucking this bitter herbal tea through a metal straw known as a <em>bombilla<\/em>.\u00a0 At service stations there are special hot water vending machines where, for 1 peso, you can fill up a thermos and make mate on the road.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_356\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-356\" style=\"width: 354px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/mate-copia.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-356\" title=\"mate-copia\" src=\"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/mate-copia.jpg\" alt=\"mate-copia\" width=\"354\" height=\"241\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-356\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mate: an Argentine tradition just as important as baseball and apple pie for Americans, baguettes for the French or cricket for the Brits.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mate is the backbone of Argentine sociability.\u00a0 Just like in Arab countries where there\u2019s an art to making tea, slowing pouring the sweet brew into tiny tulip-shaped glasses, the Argentines \u00a0make a ceremony out of drinking mate.<\/p>\n<p>Only in Argentina cups are for sissies and everybody passes around the <em>gourda mate<\/em> and sucks out of the same metal straw.<\/p>\n<p>Yuck, you\u2019re thinking, totally unhygienic.\u00a0\u00a0 Sharing straws with strangers.\u00a0 Surprisingly, you get used to it.<\/p>\n<p>Gauchito.\u00a0 Throughout the country you\u2019ll find small roadside shrines dedicated to this uniquely Argentine folk saint, Gauchito Gil.\u00a0 At each shrine, cheerful red flags flap in the wind and offerings are scattered about.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_357\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-357\" style=\"width: 448px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/IMG_7825-gauchito.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-357\" title=\"IMG_7825-gauchito\" src=\"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/IMG_7825-gauchito.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_7825-gauchito\" width=\"448\" height=\"299\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/IMG_7825-gauchito.jpg 448w, http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/IMG_7825-gauchito-195x130.jpg 195w, http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/IMG_7825-gauchito-350x233.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 448px) 100vw, 448px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-357\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gauchito can perform great miracles, but he expects something in return. Cigarettes and whisky will do.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Argentines believe Gauchito has the power to heal, but this saint expects something for his efforts.\u00a0 Motorists leave bottles of whiskey, cigarettes, sweets, and even money.\u00a0 Once we even found an old pair of shoes that had been offered to up at a Gauchito shrine.<\/p>\n<p>Seems odd at first, but who\u2019s to judge?\u00a0 Americans toss millions of coins down wishing wells, also hoping for miracles.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_358\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-358\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/IMG_7910-ericgauchito.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-358\" title=\"IMG_7910-ericgauchito\" src=\"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/IMG_7910-ericgauchito-400x250.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_7910-ericgauchito\" width=\"400\" height=\"250\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-358\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Roadside Gauchito shrines make great spots for a siesta.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/IMG_7906-gauchitohouse.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-359\" title=\"IMG_7906-gauchitohouse\" src=\"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/IMG_7906-gauchitohouse.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_7906-gauchitohouse\" width=\"380\" height=\"336\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Siestas.\u00a0 In most parts of the world, siestas have fallen out of fashion.\u00a0 In our <em>time is money culture<\/em>, who can afford to slice off part of the day for a leisurely nap?\u00a0 Argentines.\u00a0 That\u2019s who.<\/p>\n<p>You will be hard-pressed to find anything moving on main street between the hours of 1PM and 5PM in most of small town Argentina.\u00a0 Shops, office and even supermarkets are locked up tight and everybody\u2019s at home snuggled up in bed frittering away the afternoon.\u00a0 Great for sleepy Argentines, less so for hungry cyclists.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_360\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-360\" style=\"width: 336px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/IMG_7529-hours2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-360\" title=\"IMG_7529-hours2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/IMG_7529-hours2.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_7529-hours2\" width=\"336\" height=\"366\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-360\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Oh look, extended hours.
