{"id":3178,"date":"2012-01-29T17:08:23","date_gmt":"2012-01-29T09:08:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/?p=3178"},"modified":"2019-12-28T15:44:22","modified_gmt":"2019-12-28T20:44:22","slug":"hanoi-to-the-highlands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/2012\/01\/hanoi-to-the-highlands\/","title":{"rendered":"Hanoi to the Highlands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hanoi held us for almost a week.&nbsp; A combination of comfortable lodging, crunchy baguettes and travel fatigue conspired to keep us pushing back our departure \u201cjust one more day\u201d again and again and again.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 333px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/worldbiking\/sets\/72157628802207665\/\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Arrivin in Hanoi by bicycle\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/6692762865_a3d4ebdf78.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"333\" height=\"500\"><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hanoi's hard to leave when you've got everything you need at your fingertips.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While much time was spent holed up indoors, I did venture out for a walk around West Lake, Hanoi\u2019s largest:&nbsp; 17 kilometers of shoreline to be exact.  Leaving the guidebook stashed in the panniers and just wandering around is my favorite way to explore any city.&nbsp;&nbsp; And with the shore as my guide, getting lost seemed highly improbable.  Mostly I met a lot of fisherman.&nbsp; Friendly ones who invited me over to have a look at their catch.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/6719536971_c1c0c5eecf_z.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 5px solid black;\" title=\"Hanoi Fisherman\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/6719536971_c1c0c5eecf_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"512\" height=\"342\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/6719536971_c1c0c5eecf_z.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 5px solid black;\" title=\"Gone Fishing in Hanoi\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/6723561863_c9c96697c0_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"512\" height=\"318\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I also stumbled across <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Quan_Thanh_Temple\">Qu\u00e1n Th\u00e1nh Temple<\/a> <\/strong>where locals were busy preparing for Tet (the lunar new year).&nbsp; Many were presenting the Buddah with offerings of money, sweets and even booze\u2026 praying for health, happiness and luck in the new year.&nbsp; Others were lining up for scholars to pen good wishes for 2012.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/6719536971_c1c0c5eecf_z.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 5px solid black;\" title=\"Temple Scholar\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/6779370395_f8bcb78fb0.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"333\" height=\"500\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In theory, Tet should be an interesting time to visit Vietnam\u2014get an inside look at the celebrations; see colorful local life, etc.&nbsp; The stuff guidebooks rave about.<\/p>\n<h3>Reality is a bit different.<\/h3>\n<p>The streets of Hanoi were thronged with shoppers as we inched our way out of the city.&nbsp; Think Christmas Eve at the Mall of America.&nbsp; People zipped along with kumquat trees strapped to the back of motorbikes and bicycles.&nbsp; The deep orange fruit trees\u2014which symbolize fertility&#8211; added a splash of color to the dreary winter scenery, but the overloaded &nbsp;machines were just one more road hazard to contend with.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/worldbiking\/sets\/72157628802207665\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 5px solid black;\" title=\"Tet Tree\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/6780792571_9bfdae4e54.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"333\" height=\"500\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As we cycled further along Highway 6 towards the Laos border, water buffalo on the road posed a bigger worry.&nbsp; And drunks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/worldbiking\/sets\/72157628802207665\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 5px solid black;\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/6759841825_6d66314082.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"333\" height=\"500\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Dangerous Times<\/h3>\n<p>From what we observed on the roads, Tet is little more than a three day drunk.&nbsp; Cycling is relatively safe until about mid-morning, since everybody\u2019s still snug in bed nursing a hangover. But by about 10 AM, revelers have sufficiently recovered to start downing moonshine all over again.&nbsp; &nbsp;Packs of youth on scooters blaze down the highway, popping wheelies and weaving dangerously across the center line.&nbsp; Teenage girls hold on tight and giggle at the antics.  Apparently traffic statistics during Tet 2012 showed some improvement over previous years.&nbsp; Just 167&nbsp;road accidents&nbsp;across the country &nbsp;killing&nbsp;137 people&nbsp;and injuring 148 others.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 512px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/worldbiking\/sets\/72157628802207665\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/6759025875_00a87f62ef_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"512\" height=\"366\"><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">It's early, so the roads are still safe.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Personal Expereinces<\/h3>\n<p>We witnessed several crashes and even more smashed helmets on the side of the road.&nbsp; In fact, we even had a crash of our own.&nbsp; A minor one.  I\u2019d pulled up beside Eric to bemoan the risky riding practices of a group of kids who had just roared past.&nbsp; As we chattered away, another pack of boys came blazing up from behind and we ended up smashing into each other. &nbsp;I went crashing into a cement pylon and tumbling down a slope.&nbsp; It hurt like hell, but all I had to show was big bump and some nasty scrapes.&nbsp; And yes, I was wearing my helmet at the time.<\/p>\n<h3>The biggest concern of all<\/h3>\n<p>Time not spent dodging drunks, was devoted to tracking down food. &nbsp;For non-meat eaters, Vietnam poses enough problems, but during Tet the difficulties reached new heights.  [vsw id=&#8221;euPqrtMqDug&#8221; source=&#8221;youtube&#8221; width=&#8221;637&#8243; height=&#8221;514&#8243; autoplay=&#8221;no&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 512px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/worldbiking\/sets\/72157628802207665\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"Feasting on Fido\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/6719541391_22876eb587_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"512\" height=\"372\"><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">No, I'm really not interested in feasting on Fido.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Most businesses come to a grinding 3-day halt during the Lunar New Year.&nbsp; Even hotels close as workers head back to their home village to spend time with relatives.<\/p>\n<p>Food is always an issue with us, as it is with most cyclists.&nbsp; Fortunately, we still had a few vegetables that we\u2019d been carting around since leaving the capital.&nbsp; On day two of Tet a few small shops opened back up, but all that was available was junk food.&nbsp;&nbsp; We loaded up on choco-pies and sweeties plus a few packets of instant ramen noodles which pumped us with enough energy to climb the grueling hills.<\/p>\n<h3>No exaggeration this time<\/h3>\n<p>I know the word grueling finds its way into most of my blog posts, but we\u2019re not talking hyperbole this time.  9,252 meters (30,354 feet) of climbing in just under 500 kilometers.&nbsp; Up and down all day long day after day all the way to Dien Bien Phu.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3183\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3183\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/profile-dien-bien-phu.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3183 \" style=\"border: 5px solid black;\" title=\"profile dien bien phu\" src=\"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/profile-dien-bien-phu-500x263.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"263\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/profile-dien-bien-phu-500x263.png 500w, http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/profile-dien-bien-phu.png 650w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3183\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">So steep and so many climbs!  I love' em anyway!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The lush highlands of Vietnam are very different from urban areas and coastal regions.&nbsp; First off, the vast majority of the highlanders belong to one of 15 different ethnic groups.&nbsp; Few ethnic Vietnamese live in the mountains where living conditions are often harsh.&nbsp; Subsistence farming is a way of life for most hill tribes.&nbsp; Women can often been seen weaving brightly colored fabric and men toiling away in the fields with their water buffalo.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/worldbiking\/sets\/72157628802207665\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 5px solid black;\" title=\"Tribal Woman, Vietnam\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/6759841427_9c7de9ea92.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"333\" height=\"500\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/worldbiking\/sets\/72157628802207665\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 5px solid black;\" title=\"Working the Fields in Vietnam\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/6759842925_a14ec7d29e_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"512\" height=\"342\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Homes are simple, usually built of wood or even mud huts in very poor areas.&nbsp; Many hill tribe people live in stilt houses, with humans on top and animals living below.<\/p>\n<p>One night we even got the chance to sleep in one of these quaint dwellings.&nbsp; Regular blog readers can imagine the scene:&nbsp; the sun is sliding behind the mountains, we\u2019ve got what looks to be a long, steep climb ahead of us and there appears to be no place to sleep.&nbsp; Every inch of land in the highlands is occupied either by animals, people or crops.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m slogging away, gently cursing under my breath\u2026I knew we should have stopped at the last village.&nbsp; We\u2019re gonna be climbing this @#$#$ mountain till midnight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop , Stop,\u201d I hear Eric bellowing, \u201cthere\u2019s a hotel!\u201d  WHAAAAAT? No way, a hotel, out here in the middle of no where in the heart of the hill country?&nbsp; Impossible, I wail.<\/p>\n<p>But Eric\u2019s right.&nbsp; There is a hotel, of sorts.<\/p>\n<p>Before you start conjuring up images of clean white sheets and hot showers, let me set a few things straight.&nbsp; Eric had spotted a sign announcing <em>Nha Nghi<\/em>.&nbsp; Guesthouse in Vietnamese.<\/p>\n<p>There was a house, one on stilts, with the animals slumbering below, that was offering accommodation to passersby.&nbsp; Who might come to such a place I wondered.&nbsp; Certainly no middle class Vietnamese would put up with such rustic conditions.  But foreigners would.&nbsp; For the \u201cauthentic\u201d experience.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 512px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/worldbiking\/sets\/72157628802207665\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"village guesthouse\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/6780874371_db89eb2b0f_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"512\" height=\"342\"><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Simple, but good enough for us.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I climbed up a rickety ladder into a spacious room with mats for sleeping and a worn mosquito net for privacy.&nbsp; The old man in charge soon appeared with heavy blankets, all wrapped up in plastic to save them from the dust.&nbsp; He carefully swept out the room with and then jury-rigged lighting from the main house.&nbsp; There was a certain charm to the lodgings and you certainly couldn\u2019t complain about the price at the equivalent of around $2.50.<\/p>\n<p>Later, the lady of the house cooked up our remaining vegetables (no charge, part of the rural hospitality) and we drifted off to sleep to the sounds of the animals shifting and relieving themselves below.<\/p>\n<p>Another evening, we were treated to hospitality from the village health center.&nbsp; The people of the mountains were some of the kindest we encountered<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 512px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/worldbiking\/sets\/72157628802207665\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/6759893093_b9c547c4d1_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"512\" height=\"342\"><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">In almost every country we've cycled, we're always offered hospitality.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After almost a week\u2019s riding from Hanoi, we conquered the final climb in Vietnam and rolled across the border into Laos: country 84.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 512px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/worldbiking\/sets\/72157628802207665\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 3px solid black;\" title=\"Laos Vietnam border crossing\" src=\"http:\/\/worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/6779454231_c19e9508c0_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"512\" height=\"384\"><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">A trip down memory lane as we return to Laos after more than 15 years.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This is a special place for us because Laos is where we met, some 15 years ago, when we were both embarking on our very first long-term travel experiences.<\/p>\n<p>Back then, I would have never predicted that I\u2019d end up devoting more than 8 years of my life to full-time travel.&nbsp; Back in 1996, I thought a stint travelling in Asia was just a short break from \u201creal life.\u201d  After my little Asia adventure, I thought I\u2019d return to the US, get another job in corporate America and slave way until 65.<\/p>\n<p>I guess there\u2019s no way one can predict life\u2019s twists and turns.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div
