{"id":2627,"date":"2011-10-29T01:10:08","date_gmt":"2011-10-29T04:10:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/?p=2627"},"modified":"2019-12-28T14:09:30","modified_gmt":"2019-12-28T19:09:30","slug":"changing-continents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/2011\/10\/changing-continents\/","title":{"rendered":"Changing Continents"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\"><br \/>\n<em>All my life I have lived and behaved very much like the sandpiper &#8211; just running down the edges of different countries and continents, &#8216;looking for something&#8217;.<\/em><br \/>\n<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.brainyquote.com\/quotes\/quotes\/e\/elizabethb164283.html\">Elizabeth Bishop<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>15 hours in a cramped Boeing 737 and we arrive bleary eyed in Hong Kong.<\/p>\n<p>After a nightmare 30 kilometer ride from the airport, across Lantau Island, over a mountain and into the city center, we give thanks that some higher being has spared us from being flattened by the careening double-decker buses, lurching street-cars and speeding taxis.<\/p>\n<h3>A battle with the world\u2019s longest outdoor escalator<\/h3>\n<p>Our Hong Kong expat host\u2019s flat is located just off the 800-meter hillside escalator that climbs up to the posh residential buildings of the mid-levels district.<\/p>\n<p>Tired of pushing my bike up the steep steps, I opt for the escalator and soon regret my decision as the bike comes crashing back at me, threatening to start a domino effect of downed pedestrians.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually we arrive at Martin\u2019s place, collapse into bed and vow to never, ever take another flight so long as we live.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2643\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2643\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/air-china.gif\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2643\" title=\"air-china\" src=\"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/air-china-500x303.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"303\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/air-china-500x303.gif 500w, http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/air-china.gif 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-caption-dd\">No more flights.  Next time we&#8217;ll hop on a cargo ship.<\/h4>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 15px; font-weight: bold;\">East meets West<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In the morning, I discover that Hong Kong isn\u2019t all that different from Vancouver.<\/p>\n<p>Hong Kong is home to around 120,000 expats&#8211; 60,000 of them Americans.&nbsp; Vancouver\u2019s ethnic Asian population is estimated at 38%.<\/p>\n<p>Wander around Vancouver\u2019s bustling Chinatown and you\u2019ll come across daikon radishes and gourmet chicken feet, dried scallops and rare wild ginseng.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re ailing, pop into one of the many pharmacies for a traditional Chinese medicinal cure.&nbsp; Down the road is Cafe O, a trendy place for lunch, then there are the numerous British-style pubs and further on there&#8217;s a Starbucks.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp mceIEcenter\">\n<dl id=\"attachment_2637\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 510px;\">\n<dt class=\"wp-caption-dt\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/hong-kong-view.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2637\" title=\"hong-kong-view\" src=\"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/hong-kong-view-500x375.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/hong-kong-view-500x375.gif 500w, http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/hong-kong-view.gif 650w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2643\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">On a morning walk up to The Peak we got a glimpse of Hong Kong spreading out below.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Deprived of nothing<\/h3>\n<p>A five minute walk brings me to the Wellcome Supermarket (and no, the double L is not a typo).&nbsp; Imported products from smelly French cheese and Driscoll\u2019s strawberries from southern California to Aunt Jemima pancake mix and Campbell\u2019s soup line the shelves.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s food heaven for foreigners on expat salaries and a major test of self-control for cash-strapped travelers.<\/p>\n<p>Are we experiencing culture shock on this new continent?&nbsp; Not really.<\/p>\n<h3>Something to worry about<\/h3>\n<p>What we are experiencing is bit of anxiety.<\/p>\n<p>Visa anxiety.&nbsp; Chinese visa application anxiety.<\/p>\n<p>A simple process according to guidebooks and blogs.&nbsp; Fill out the forms, attach a photo, pay your fee and pickup is in 4 days.<\/p>\n<p>After a good two hour wait at the visa office, our number finally popped up on the screen: 106.<\/p>\n<p>We scurried &nbsp;to the front, and shoved the completed 6 page application forms and passports through a narrow slot in a window.<\/p>\n<h3>Rejection<\/h3>\n<p>After a cursory glance, the stone-faced official staring out from behind the window shoved them back. \u201cYou bring these documents.&nbsp; Come back tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With our rejected passports and applications came a list of requirements:<\/p>\n<p>1)&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The round trip tickets<\/p>\n<p>2)&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Hotel booking for the visiting cities in China<\/p>\n<p>3)&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Travel insurance in China or worldwide<\/p>\n<p>4)&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; You travel schedule (daily) in China (with printed version only)<\/p>\n<h3>What now?<\/h3>\n<p>We\u2019re in trouble.&nbsp;&nbsp; Big trouble.<\/p>\n<p>Number four\u2014proof of travel insurance\u2014was the only item we could possibly provide.<\/p>\n<p>Why all the hassle?&nbsp; With the help of google we discovered why.<\/p>\n<p>French passports.&nbsp; How could we magically produce the necessary documents?<\/p>\n<p>There was an alternative.&nbsp; We could contact a professional visa service.&nbsp; A fixer, if you will.<\/p>\n<p>Those people have connections and are known for their expertise at finagling the system.&nbsp; Their services don\u2019t come free, naturally.&nbsp; And being married to a man whose primary motivation in life is to cut costs, I knew a visa service was out of question.<\/p>\n<h3>Out of thin air<\/h3>\n<p>In the end, we\u2014rather miraculously I must say\u2014managed to produce all the required documents.&nbsp; Proof of onward flights, city by city hotel bookings and a detailed daily travel schedule\u2026the whole shebang.<\/p>\n<p>Now it\u2019s just a question of waiting.<\/p>\n<p>The same stone-faced official accepted our applications and instructed us to come back Monday.&nbsp;
