{"id":178,"date":"2010-11-08T16:13:15","date_gmt":"2010-11-08T21:13:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/?p=178"},"modified":"2016-12-30T12:38:26","modified_gmt":"2016-12-30T17:38:26","slug":"two-on-tour-a-survival-guide-to-cycling-with-a-partner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/2010\/11\/two-on-tour-a-survival-guide-to-cycling-with-a-partner\/","title":{"rendered":"Two on Tour: a survival guide to cycling with a partner"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1510\" title=\"two-on-tour survival guide to cycling with a partner\" src=\"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/two-on-tour.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"435\" height=\"303\" \/><\/p>\n<p>24\/7 with the same person for months, possibly years, on end?\u00a0\u00a0 Sounds like a recipe for a short-lived romance, a costly divorce or a nasty end to a friendship.<\/p>\n<p>Add to that the stress of biking through unknown lands under sometimes harsh climatic conditions and you start wondering if two on tour is such a good idea after all.<\/p>\n<p>It is.\u00a0 Biking the world with a partner means you\u2019ll always have someone with whom to share the joys, triumphs and tough times of your bike tour.\u00a0 Cresting the top of a mountain and taking in the spectacular valley vista below just wouldn\u2019t be the same without someone to ooh and aahh with.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/IMG_4920-eric-amaya-columbiagorge.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-179\" title=\"Happy times touring as two.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/IMG_4920-eric-amaya-columbiagorge.JPG\" alt=\"Happy times touring as two.\" width=\"400\" height=\"296\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/IMG_4920-eric-amaya-columbiagorge.JPG 576w, http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/IMG_4920-eric-amaya-columbiagorge-500x369.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Slogging 500 kilometers on a sandy track and no one to cheer with once the tarmac re-appears?\u00a0 No thanks.<\/p>\n<p>And who wants to grumble alone about all the kamikaze drivers trying to run you off the road.\u00a0 A partner with whom you can commiserate goes a long way in keeping up morale.<\/p>\n<p>Here are 5 things we\u2019ve learned about getting along together on the road:<\/p>\n<p>1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Discuss tour expectations BEFORE you set off.\u00a0 Just four days into our epic Africa tour I shocked Eric by suggesting we take a day off.\u00a0 He\u2019d thought finishing off the Sahara without a rest would be no problem.\u00a0 Read conflict and quarrels.<\/p>\n<p>2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Accept physical limitations.\u00a0 If you\u2019re a stronger cyclist and your partner\u2019s always lagging five kilometers behind, divvy up the weight so you\u2019re both equally challenged.\u00a0 This will relieve a huge amount of frustration and ensure everybody\u2019s getting a good work-out without the weaker cyclist risking a coronary.<\/p>\n<p>3)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Don\u2019t shy away from talking money.\u00a0 Alright, we\u2019d been married for almost 10 years, so we were used to talking finances.\u00a0 But still there were arguments.\u00a0 As I recall it, Eric asked in an off-handed manner how much he thought we\u2019d spend per day.\u00a0 Around $10 per person, per day, I reckoned.<\/p>\n<p>Turns out for him, that figure was set in stone.<\/p>\n<p>$10 per person, per day meant $7,300 per year, not a penny more.\u00a0 A new computer, airline tickets for an unanticipated flight back to Europe, replacement gear&#8211; all that was supposed to come out of the daily budget.\u00a0 Before you know it he was trying to cut me off from hotels with hot showers and trips to the bakery.<\/p>\n<p>My advice?\u00a0 Agree to a detailed budget and put it in writing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/money-puzzle.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-180\" style=\"border: 2px solid black;\" title=\"Stock Photos\" src=\"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/money-puzzle.jpg\" alt=\"Stock Photos\" width=\"423\" height=\"283\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/money-puzzle.jpg 847w, http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/money-puzzle-500x334.jpg 500w, http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/money-puzzle-195x130.jpg 195w, http:\/\/www.worldbiking.info\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/money-puzzle-350x233.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 423px) 100vw, 423px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>4)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Take a little time for yourself.\u00a0 When you\u2019re out bike touring it can be surprisingly difficult to find time for yourself.\u00a0 Sure, when you\u2019re out pedaling you can get lost in your own private thoughts, but once you\u2019re off the bike two on tour can become stifling.\u00a0 For me yoga is the great escape.\u00a0 Other cyclists I\u2019ve met regularly schedule time apart.<\/p>\n<p>5)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Divvy up the tasks.\u00a0 I set up the tent, Eric gets dinner going, then it\u2019s my turn for clean-up.\u00a0 He keeps the bikes running , I manage the website.\u00a0 We find life on the road a lot easier this way.<\/p>\n<p>Any other ideas for making sure two on tour goes smoothly?\u00a0 Please share your tips in the comments section below.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>24\/7 with the same person for months, possibly years, on end?\u00a0\u00a0 Sounds like a recipe for a short-lived romance, a costly divorce or a nasty end to a friendship.
