join us as we cycle the african continent.

Eric and Amaya with fully-loaded bikes.Welcome to World Biking Africa!  We're Eric and Amaya, a French-American couple who set off in June 2006 to explore Africa by bicycle.  After 17 months of high adventure, from hassles with drunken officials in Guinea Bissau to a long slog through the desolate Namib desert, we arrived in Cape Town, having traversed 32 countries and pedaled more than 30,000 kilometers.   From Africa's southernmost tip, we began the long journey home via East Africa.  The new year brought with it a fit of Africa exhaustion and a sudden change of plans brought us to South India for a six month sojourn. We cycled around the sub-continent, sampled its ashrams and stayed fit by doing lots of yoga.  July 18th, 2008 marked our return to South Africa, from where we headed north towards Swaziland, then on to Mozambique, into Malawi, up towards Tanzania, through Kenya and into Ethiopia.   From there, we'll cycle into Sudan for another gruelling slog through the desert before reaching Cairo, where we hope to ring in the New Year 2009.

Cycling is an environmentally-friendly, cost-effective and healthy means of transport and we hope our bike trip will inspire others to (re)discover the pleasures of pedaling.  Our trip is more than just the realization of a personal dream:  we are cycling in support of CAMFED  an international charity that promotes educations for girls in Africa.

New FAQs!   updated May 2008
What's a typical day?  How do we afford to travel for so long?  What in the world do we eat when we're on the road?  The answers are all found here.

For specific country by country information on routes & roads, food & accommodation and the locals, check out our new Country Info page here.

Update 28  11 November  2008         Kenya
Exploring the tribal region of Northeast Kenya proves to be more adventure than we reckoned with.  The people living near lake Turkana are fascinating, but with inter-tribal conflicts, rough tracks instead of roads and some of the harshest terrain in Africa, we've got our work cut out for us.

Update 27  5 October  2008         Tanzania-Zanzibar
White sands and turquoise waters, an exotic melange of the Arab, Indian and African worlds--a trip to Zanzibar isn't to be missed.  Plus a few anecdotes about life on the road.

Update 26  11 September  2008         Malawi
Africa.  We love it.  We hate it.   We can't seem to escape it.  Malawi the second time around.  The lake still sparkles, the kids still clamber to get a look at the passing Mzungu and our patience starts wearing thin with the everyday trials of being on the road.
